On writing

Sometimes I wonder if the preparation most authors put into writing is worth it. Would it come out just as well if the background were made up on the fly as it is needed to move the story? I know that many writers do extensive planning, and I wonder if it is necessary. After all, some of the very best literature goes completely unplanned. Like ( Read more... )

To each his own, I guess. Others might state examples of great writers who planned carefully and bad writers who didn't plan, and talk about how their writing came to a halt when they didn't plan.

I prefer having a rough enough guideline of how the story flows before I begin. My muse, on the other hand, prefers doing snippets, flowing scenes which I later stitch together with planning.

Definitely to each his own. My muse agrees with yours, and I'm wondering if I shouldn't just agree with my muse.
