First off, if you haven’t read any of the Temeraire books… you must. It’s historical fiction with the backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars. You’ve got the Infantry, the Navy, and the Aviators. “But wait!” I hear you say, “what are these ‘Aviators’ and what be their element of contribution to the fight?” I’ll tell you my dear friends. Dragons. Balls out, mother dragons. They have dragons as a legitimate, aerial, military wing of the government(s). (Each country has them and some have managed to breed some with interesting (FIRE, VITRIOLIC ACID, SONIC BLAST, WATER spouting breeds.) The characters are fleshed out, Novik knows her time period damn well, and the main character(s) aren’t the perfect underdogs that get a fairy tale ending making the characters and the events believable. To top it all off, the next book is due out sometime this year which will resolve the cliff hangerish ending of the last.
Naomi Novik <<- check her out
In that vein, I was recommended this other book by a Borders guy called “Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell” as it too was historical fiction of the Napoleanic Wars… only with wizards! (by Susanna Clarke) It’s huge and I love it thus far. One day and I’m at page 123 (it seemed right to pause there as I needed sleep and it was very sequential number).
Also, my brothers found this for me
