SPN PICSPAM: The Cinematographic Use of Lighting in 5.04

Oct 08, 2009 12:01

For television, the cinematographic work on Supernatural has been quite consistently precise and meaningful over the years. But in the case of such an important episode of the series as 'The End', the lighting and shot composition work (done by Serge Ladouceur with this week’s director, Steve Boyum) held an especially prominent position. While ( Read more... )

Really fascinating and informative to see how the cinematography was used to really enhance the viewers reading of things, esp the Dean/future!Dean scenes. Thanks!

This really was a prominent episode for lighting, so I was happy to point it out! Glad you could enjoy!

this is absolutely fabulous. I love that people are finding so much basis for a happy ending; it just makes my heart lighter, you know?

Oh yea, totally. I used to be one of those 'winchester doom ending will be the only way' kinda girls but after last season, man, I just can't help but want a good happy ending for these boys. They've just been put through just about the worst ringer imaginable at this point, and damn, my heart can only take so much. Not like I can tell how Kripke's gonna do it, but at this point, any ending that isn't Lucifer possessing Sam and cracking Dean's neck with his foot? Will be happy for me.

Anyway, glad to see you could enjoy!

Ha, glad it could be enlightening!

The eye glint thing took me a while actually, I was just so stuck on why the hell that 2009!Dean struck me as so young and bright like we hadn't seen in ages. Was it a filter or...what? And then it just popped out at me. When I realized the one eye glint on 2014!Dean, it was definitely one of those, WHOA, SHUT UP SHOW moments. Serge definitely gets a fruitbasket from me for this one.

I never catch all the nuances... it's a learning process. I did know enough to say.. oh a rose (that means something) and I remembered all the bridges. But as for everything else, these metas are my school and I'm a fascinated student. Also, anything with picspam has my attention.

The one thing I actually did notice.. all on my little lonesome.. was that Dean walked toward Sam at the end. He did not wait for Sam to come to him -- in fact he went farther... to me that was a good sign... the closing of the gap, the acknowledgment of a more equal footing. Also that Dean had some apologizing of his own to do. Dean had some major insight this ep. How "inhuman" he could be himself, without Sam. He may not be supernatural.. but Hell brought out the inherent evil that is in all of us (given the right circumstances?)

Great thoughts. Thank you

Ha, you're right! I must have rewatched that ending dozens of times, but I never internalized that! Dean definitely ends up walking right up to the hood of Sam's car. Very nifty little thought.

It was a lovely conclusion that he found Sam was not alone in needing him. That he needed Sam as well. Two-way street and all that. I love they were able to get him to this revelation so early because I was fearing we'd have to wait half a season to get to this point. This early is quite refreshing!

At any rate, glad you could enjoy the post!
