I didn't hear that you got laid off, but if there is ever anyone who can make contracting work out well, it's you. I've worked with quite a few friends going a similar path (contracting for a decade or two) and I've noticed that 1) they are really into their jobs and happy about it and 2) they make more money than me. So congrats, you've graduated from the drudgery into excitement and freedom etc.
