Hey, you know me... can't pass this one up. :P

1) Mm, I'll state the obvious. "Sandstorm Calling" by Andy Hunter and "Desert Rose" by Sting.

2) Again, obvious. "The Ocean" by Mae and "Gabriel (Across the Sea Mix)" by Glow (I'm pretty sure you can get the latter for free on Amazon.com... and you can file these under "contemplative" too)

3) See #4. I'll have to give it some thought and come up with others.

4) I think you said before that you weren't too impressed with them, but Anberlin's new CD has dominated my car stereo and iPod for the past month, and everybody I have played it for has been just as impressed, so there must be more to it than me fangirling. Care to give them another chance? I'd recommend "The Unwinding Cable Car" for a good ballad, "Dismantle.Repair," "Hello Alone," and "Alexithymia" for more of an edge with introspective lyrics, and "(*Fin)" for the 8-minute epic complete with a children's choir and spiritual angst. :D

Hmm...lately, I've been trying to remember what some of the really good music I used to listen to was. So anyway, here are a few things that come to mind. If I can think of anything better, I'll let you know.

1) When I was a pre-teen, I'd fall asleep every night listening to a song called "elle g" by the Newsboys. It's on their "Going Public" CD. The first part of the song would make me think of a foresaken, dusty desert...and then near the end, I'd think of a solitary lake.

2) First thing that comes to mind is "Over Oceans" by Josh Garrels. Another good one might be "River Roll" by the same artist...very moving lyrics.

3) "Deliver Me (Antidromic Mix)" and "Intoxicating (Pneumatic Mix)" by David Crowder Band. Make sure you get the mix versions, not the originals.
"Raindown (Piano Mix)" by Cloud 2 Ground.
"Said the Sun to the Shine" by Earthsuit.
"Silence" by Blindside.

4) "okay" by Mutemath
"Over Blue City" by Skypark
"Midnight" by Blindside

3) The Matrix Soundtrack: Rob D- Clubbed to death. Moby- Porcline.

Aside from the musical themes you listed, what genre do you want to hear? For jazz I highly reccomend John Coltrane and Wynton Marsalis (sp?). Contemporary rock goes to Great Lakes Myth Society- a signed Michigan band that has a very unique sound and writes a lot about MI. They're my current favorite band, and I can give you a copy of their CD. I'll also give you Ani D's "Knuckledown". Mellow, sophisticated, and wholly unique. And in the "Screwtape Letters" spirit, you must hear Rollins Band, "Liar". Tool wrote a great tribute to Maynard's late mother called "Wings for Maria (pt. 2)"
