Thou Shall Not.

Having somehow magically been able to support myself for the past five-six years on DJing alone, thanks to the efforts of friends and awesome people alike, having been able to achieve five Residencies, been given the gift of my own night in Boston, kept that night for a year, and now with several future irons in the fire, people have started to ask ( Read more... )

Love this, especially about hitting the reds. If people can't hold a conversation without shouting, they sure as hell can't order drinks, which means that the bar ain't making money, and there's a good chance you won't be asked back.

The only thing I would offer is "Don't panic if the dancefloor clears" -- if you've been driving them hard for 20-30 minutes, they may just want a freakin' break. If you're lucky, they're at the bar drinking, so take them moment to flip to something slower, BPM wise, and bring some others onto the floor who may have been waiting for their genre. Learn to rotate your dance floor and follow the rhythms of the PEOPLE there that night. You may be taking them on a journey, but they have a right to get off the boat if the sightseeing sucks.

Ganking for repost, if that's cool.

Totally flattered! And absolutely - follow the flow of the floor is a must-do.

+1 on redlining. I remember one time running front of house where a DJ was spinning and I repeatedly had to make my way to the stage and tell him to turn waaay the fuck down. I had the pre's on my board all the way down and the pads in, yet he was still hitting red on my channels!

I should add something: get your hearing tested. Though you may not be doing sound for bands and events, you still need to get things sounding reasonably good. If you aren't sure what you are hearing, you can't do that.

no redlining it!?!?!?!

but that's how, as a DJ, I turn it up to 11.

there's a part of me that wonders if any of this refers to particular individuals or events of late, or if it's just been building.

also, thank you. i feel like i've been [if only a small part lately] in on much of your journey so far, and have really loved watching.

will you be at DWT tonight?

You give me so much energy when I'm playing music that it's all I can do to reflect it back to yourself and to everyone else there. I'm honored to be a part of something amazing.

No DWT, was way too tired to do the 200+ mile drive tonight. Love watching your journey as well; you're one of the only ones I can geek out in an Engineering way :)

Wow, hope I never meet the dicks you are referring to here. Also, guess I have to consider pottery.

The foreplay analogy is perfect. When people request (or sometimes DEMAND) something more aggressive, I say don't worry, we're building up to it.
