The only thing I would offer is "Don't panic if the dancefloor clears" -- if you've been driving them hard for 20-30 minutes, they may just want a freakin' break. If you're lucky, they're at the bar drinking, so take them moment to flip to something slower, BPM wise, and bring some others onto the floor who may have been waiting for their genre. Learn to rotate your dance floor and follow the rhythms of the PEOPLE there that night. You may be taking them on a journey, but they have a right to get off the boat if the sightseeing sucks.

I should add something: get your hearing tested. Though you may not be doing sound for bands and events, you still need to get things sounding reasonably good. If you aren't sure what you are hearing, you can't do that.

The foreplay analogy is perfect. When people request (or sometimes DEMAND) something more aggressive, I say don't worry, we're building up to it.
