[The feed turns on to show Mami thoughtfully looking at a tarot card, though the way she's holding it only the back can be seen.]It's a little odd that they ignore us on a personal level most of the time, but then they give us these on our birthdays, isn't it? On the other hand, our birthdays are what determines which sign we fall under, so maybe ( Read more... )

I suppose it is rather thoughtful of them, though given what they expect us to engage in based on these cards, I cannot say it's all that surprising.

Regardless, happy birthday. Do you plan to celebrate the occasion?

That's certainly true.

...I don't really have any plans for a party or anything of the sort. Maybe a private dinner with a friend.

That sounds very pleasant. Will there be cake involved as well? A birthday should always have cake.

[even N got vegan cake, okay. there is no excuse.]

Ah, yes, that's right. I should bake myself a cake as well.

That sounds like an excellent idea. I would make my favorite since it's a special occasion, though I must say I'm not very good at decorating them. Do you know what kind of you will be making?

Hmm... Probably a marble cake with chocolate frosting. It has more of a mixture of flavors that way than if I made it all chocolate.

I have never tried marble cake. What is that like?

You make two half-batches of cake batter that only differ in their flavor, and then you pour both of them into the cake pans and swirl them together. The way the two colors of batter mix with each other is a bit reminiscent of the veining you see in marble and other types of stone, which explains the name. It's pretty good, as long as the flavors you choose go well together. I'm planning to just use traditional vanilla and chocolate.

That actually sounds quite wonderful! I'm sure there are a plethora of combinations one could try. I have been intending to try baking a cake myself for quite some time now, so this sounds like a simple but unique experiment even I could try.

[not that N's a bad cook, just inexperienced.]

[Mami nods with a smile.]

It's always best to start with something simple when you're learning something new, but making a marble cake isn't really much more complicated than making a normal cake.

Thank you for the advice. It sounds like you are experienced with baking. I've read many books on it, but I am a novice when it comes to practical application.

I guess you could say that, I helped my mom cook and bake from when I was a little girl. And baking can be a rather soothing activity when I'm feeling stressed.

How wonderful. Baking with your mother must have been so fun...

[N can't help but sigh, wistful and envious.]

I will have to give it a try myself. People who bake seem to have quite a lot of fun with it and I could use other relaxing activities to fill my day with.

Yes, helping out my mother in the kitchen are some of my most cherished memories of her.

[She notices the way N sighs, but she doesn't want to pry into something that might be painful for him.]

It can be very fun. I hope you enjoy it.
