002. [video/note.]

[ well, there isn't much to go by with his mask on and his general lack of presence on the network, recently - but it doesn't take a terribly scrutinising gaze to realise leaks is looking somewhat... ill at ease about something. anxious, maybe. although he's clearly sitting in the library, his back is oddly rigid against the seat, leaning away from ( Read more... )

[an astonished noise.]

That appears to be a laser pointer. My friends and I would play with them often in my youth. I am sure your pet will appreciate the gift.

[N and zorua and woobat would run around the playroom, chasing the little red dot while darmanitan moved the pointer around n___n good times!!!]

[ ... this is just getting strange, now. first a laser is used to remove a tattoo, and then it's a weapon, and now it's being spoken of regarding 'pets' and the old style of cats. just what is going on...

this person seems to gather something he doesn't, and he'd really rather not admit confusion in public, so he switches to PRIVATE. ]

... What are you babbling about.

Is a laser something to be trifled with so casually?

[a brief pause as he blinks his confusion away. all he knows about lasers, he learned from the genesect project and from playing with laser pointers in his youth.]

Certain lasers have the capability to cause harm but those are extreme cases involving weapons. I do not know very much about those. However, the laser you have presented is the sort used for play. It is not dangerous.

Hou. You know it in that capacity, as well...

[ ... and nobody has yet tried to build something with destructive power, here? why. are they all so shortsighted that, even with such knowledge at their disposal, it doesn't occur to them?...

... or is it that the necessary components or skills simply aren't available, yet. ]

Just how powerful are these weapons?

[he makes a thoughtful noise before answering, a barely palpable sadness in his tone. for now, he assumes this person is simply curious due to not having this level of technology in his world. even if that wasn't the case, it wasn't as if N himself knew how to construct such a thing anyway. that was dudley's forte.]

The ones I had experience with were, from my understanding, very powerful since they were made with the intent to be used in battle. I don't doubt they could have taken an innocent life in the wrong hands... I know the formula for a laser's numerical aperture but I am no scientist so constructing even a simple one would be impossible for me.

[ of course. he couldn't expect much from someone so unassuming, thinking he would be trying to make some toy. still... to know something at all is advancement, and if he knows the numerical aperture, then... ]

... I want this formula from you. For the sake of comparison to other laser devices I'm likely to be looking at.

[ he smiles thinly. ]

Lest I make another mistake, you understand.

Gladly.

[he switches his own feed to video after a moment, the camera pointed to a pad of paper as he quickly scribbles down a set of formulas.]

To save you the trouble of looking up the standard numerical aperture formula for your comparisons later, I will write them down here for you as well and label the one you asked for accordingly.

At any rate, [insert a detailed explanation of numerical aperture and stuff regarding lasers and an overly detailed explanation of each formula he writes down.]

...and that should about cover everything. I hope you found that at least somewhat helpful?

[ did he, though. leaks watches, silently copying the whole formula down on the inside of a different book's jacket, shorthand little comments of n's that feel relevant in the margins beside them. he has no intention of returning the book to the library, anyway. ]

You've failed to cover one matter, however. Which is how you are so thoroughly informed on this topic. Are all from your world so well-versed with these devices?

[ after all. if n is something exceptional, he could also be very useful. it was just gauging how much of this was innate to his society, and how much made him unique. ]

[it's a bit of a touchy subject for him, one he would much rather avoid, but N is an expert at dancing around that which makes him uncomfortable if nothing else, and with an effortless shrug he gives a shake of his head.]

Chemistry, physics and mathematics have always fascinated me so I took it upon myself to learn as much as I could about them. From my understanding, most find the idea of mastering these formulas daunting, and I myself am far from an expert on these matters, but I would not hesitate to say that I am more well-versed than most when it comes to these things.

[he's not going to tell leaks about dudley and team plasma and the mountains of books he'd torn apart as a child. that is information for another far-off day.]

[ it is. n's spared leaks's curiosity if only because his single-mindedness overrides it, and for now, at least, n's presenting himself as a possible tool for his purposes, particularly if he should choose to pursue them in this manner.

a boy who'll ask no questions but answer many... that'd be a very convenient thing for him. charity may be an unfounded, foolish concept, but coming upon it is particularly useful for that reason - to trample those who act selflessly without having lost anything. it's what they bring on themselves. ]

... Then you may come to be useful. [ he sounds satisfied with that much. ] And if I should call on you for such a use in the future?

[the man's wording automatically sends something akin to a red flag up in N's head, but that is neither here nor there, certainly not something he's going to break down with a stranger. despite his apprehensions, he gives a slow nod.]

But of course. Feel free. I do not mind imparting my knowledge and helping those in need so long as they use that knowledge for good.

[ if he's aware of n's doubt, it doesn't show. he just makes a low, humoured noise. ]

Then you don't have reason to doubt my intentions.

Since I fully intend to better the situation.
