Happy Friday, and it's time for the new fannish5, which is this week: "Who are your five favorite sidekicks?"

Where to begin?

Pain and Panic--Disney's Hercules: The Movie. They so totally go together, and you can't really have one without the other. I love these little guys. They are Hades' foils as well as his sidekicks. And they're funny. "If... ( Read more... )

Hello! I'm Kate, here by way of lady_sarai. =)

I had to comment when I saw Faithful on here, because I used to be beyond obsessed with those books and loved Faithful. His snark added so much to those books, and I love how he chooses when she needs his 'protection'. Have you read all of her books? I really haven't found many people who have.

Nice to see you, Kate!

I, too was beyond obsessed with the Tortall books, and I have read all of them, and am looking forward to the newest one--"Bloodhound"--which appears to be coming out late this year or early next year. I always loved Faithful, and was deeply amused by his choice to protect her... or not. I'll admit, I haven't read all of her books, but I have read (and own) all of the Tortall series, and am beginning to squint at the Circle books, because I love her writing so much. (I've resisted them for years, you know, because I was so attached to Tortall, but now I'm thinking that it might be nice to read some of her other work as well. Have you read these? If so, how did they compare?)

I greatly prefer the Tortall books, although in fairness I did discover them first. I avoided the Circle books for a while, but finally broke down and got them one summer. I felt like they were written for a slightly younger audience - at the end of the series, they're still in their teens, as opposed to how Alanna gets married, etc. They're not really bad, just not quite Tortall. I did love Terrier, because I adored George to death, but I think my favorites of hers are the Trickster books.

Oh, you should have seen my eyes go all big and starry just now. I loved the Trickster books--they were my favorites as well. As much as I have always loved Alanna (she was my first hero, after all), Aly was just so much more fun.

I'll take your comments on the Circle books under advisement, thank you. They may end up being library books for me. What I did like about the Tortall books is that we see the characters mature into adulthood, which is something I might miss in the Circle books.

Out of curiosity--what did you think of the "Protector of the Small" set?
