It's rough times out there in libraryland, but I do think that spunky types (i.e. yourself) can still find jobs, with persistence. Congrats on your degree!
Detroit is a city with very little in the way of public services at all, cops and streetlights and the normal reasons people live near each other in the first place. It's also full of super-nice Michiganders and the dramatic feats of public art that happen when property costs nothing and the government is too weak to mess things up. It's heartbreaking one week and hugely inspiring the next, but it is never boring.
