I whole-heartedly agree. And happened to be thinking about topics like this just recently. Within the span of two days, I heard people talking about Charlie Sheen as a celebrity example of polyamory, and then reheard the Eddie Izzard bit about "Weirdo transvestite. Executive transvestite."
When a traditional mainstream marriage fails, no one says, "Oh well sure, of course. What do you expect, when two people try to mate for life. Sheesh. Nutjobs." (Well, okay, maybe I say that. But hardly anyone else." But if you're practicing some form of very responsible open relationship and things crash and burn, well of course, it's the relationship model that is to blame.
I'd like to think society will reach a place where we didn't need "normal" examples to get some level of acceptance. But we sure aren't there yet. :-/
I have a feeling he completely agrees with you. He's a master of debate and, seeing the argument that conservative America has against gay marriage, has placed himself directly in the way of that argument to refute it.
All his book, all his speeches, all of his argument is just so that a stepping stone can be earned that will allow us to GET to that place where everyone, regardless of circumstance, background, creed, or orientation, is treated equally.
