Hmm...I've been saying to Sarah for a while now that, despite the fact that opera is not really my "thing", I'm fascinated by The Ring and would love to see it. There's admittedly probably a sound case to be made for getting it on DVD and watching it in the privacy of my own home so I can take a break every so often, instead of solid four-hour chunks plus intervals, but even so, that's sorely tempting.

(Perhaps bizarrely, I'm more excited by that than I am the Doctor Who prom...but then I expect, as you say, that DW tickets will probably go quickly...)

I remember a few years back at one of the proms they did all of the Planets suite in one evening. If ever that gets repeated I wouldn't mind!

I suspect that Sarah and I might be interested in joining you on the dates you mentioned - I'll have a chat with her and we'll get back to you. :-)

No Planets this year, sadly. It'll come round again - I was at a concert a dozen years ago where they did the whole Holst suite and then one for Pluto that a modern composer had written. It was great.

The Ring operas, and the two Rachmaninoff piano concertos and the First Night, will also sell out very quickly - possibly even quicker than the Doctor Who one, given that the Doctor Who one is being repeated the following day as a matinee. We aren't talking within the first few minutes of them going on sale, though, and tickets don't go on sale till 11th May. We have enough time to decide what we want to see and decide a budget per person. The Who Prom is a band C, and the four Ring operas are all band D, so, considerations. :s

OK I'm absolutely up for the 1st Sep, 16th Jul and all of Der Ring des Nibelungen (ETA: with a +1, and David would like to join the Dr Who prom party, I would have loved to have gone to First Night as well but have a prior date with Tosca at the ROH)

I'm also going to Viva Verdi on the 20th July and the Verdi & Tchaikovsky on the 5th Sep (Spotting a theme here? ;D) to drool over the sound of my favourite tenor and would welcome company if you're interested.

How far in advance do you tend to know when you have to work? I'm aware of it having been tricky in the past. :s The Grieg is a chamber music one, so might not be as popular: you might be able to get tickets pretty close to time. My mother-in-law and I saw a random concert last year booked only a few days beforehand. It's the big ticket ones - Beethoven symphonies, operas, Rachmaninoff concertos - that sell out quickest.

FYI - have not bought Grieg tickets due to rota issues, but will go with you if you can get off - please keep tabs on it and let me know!
