Summary: It is Starfleet Academy policy that Professors and Cadets do not engage in relationships. Even though their relationship is a secret sometimes other people figure it out. This is the five (six) times that someone figured out something about Jim and Spock's relationship and the one time someone didn't.

GAILA
Gaila looked up from her PADD and peaked over at Jim who was laying next her on her bed, engrossed in the work on the PADD in front of him.
“No cheating.” He mumbled without looking up and bumped her shoulder with his.
“I’m not,” she hissed back and went back to her work.
Every week their engineering professor assigned a homework quiz and every week Gaila and Jim had a competition to see who could finish it the most accurately, the fastest. The loser had to buy the winner a night’s worth of drinks. They were both fairly evenly matched in the subject matter so it usually came down to speed.
So if she wanted Jim to win, Gaila had to slow down a little.
Gaila glanced away from her PADD again, this time focussing on Nyota’s dresser. A white bra strap peaked out from one of the drawers. Gaila rolled her eyes. She really needed to take Nyota out to get some properly sexy underwear. Even though she had the body to look good in anything a little lace never hurt anyone.
Gaila returned to her quiz, tearing through the calculations on the problem, everything clicking together. When she finished she briefly inspected the ceiling vents before starting up on the last problem.
Right before she finished Jim through up his hands. “I’m done!” Perfect.
“Oh no. I almost had you beat too,” It came out a little too monotone and Gaila winced. But Jim was still checking over his work so she was safe.
She finished up the last problem at leisurely pace letting herself get lost in it for a few moments. But the time she had finished Jim had his stuff packed up and was standing by the door.
Gaila sat up fast. “Leaving already?”
“Yeah, sorry.” He really did look sorry but also like he was already looking forward to where he was going.
“Where are you always disappearing off to, Jimmy? New lover?”
He winked. “I’ve got to go. Catch you later.”
And he was gone.
Gaila didn’t let his brush off bother her. She’d find out the truth soon enough. A few rounds of free drinks was always a good way to get Jim to open up. She usually didn’t resort to tricks but she had been waiting for over seven months for Jim to tell her about his new boy or girl, usually he spilled after one night. It had to be someone really awesome to keep him coming back this long. She had to know.
Nyota walked in, dumped her things on her bed and stopped short when she got one look at Gaila.
“Oh no.”
“What?” Gaila asked making her eyes look wide and innocent, a disorienting combination on her she had been told.
“Whatever evil scheme you’re cooking up I want no part of it.”
“I promise you, it is a nice scheme.”
“Uh huh, sure.”
“And I don’t need your help.”
“Good.” Nyota sat down and pulled out her PADD. “Where’s Kirk? I thought you guys were doing your quiz contest.”
“He just left.”
“Again? I’m starting to think your secret lover theory is right.”
“It is!”
“But for seven months?” Nyota looked doubtful.
“It does seem a little out of character.”
“You aren’t wrong though, all the signs do seem to point to--”
“A girlfriend or boyfriend! I have plans to get it out of him!”
Nyota sat up interested. “Your evil scheme?”
Gaila made a face at her. “My nice scheme.”
A wicked grin overtook Nyota’s face. “Maybe I do want to be involved.”
Gaila smiled wide and bounced over to Nyota’s bed to outline her plan. It was a simple plan, involving a generous sum of alcohol.
SPOCK
When his door had chimed Spock had been somewhat surprised to find Cadet Kirk--Jim--on the other side of it. Not that he had any particular expectation for who could have been calling on him in his private quarters, he got the most visitors at his office.
He was not, however, displeased at the cadet’s appearance. In fact he was rather pleased. Spock not being sure how long casual affairs typically lasted, never have engaged in one before, and left it up to Jim to initiate each encounter. Although he had occasionally had thoughts of initiating them himself when it seemed like far too long since he had last had Jim in his bed--or office.
“I have work to attend to Cadet,” said Spock making up his token protest.
“You can do it later,” said Jim at him through his eyelashes, leaning against the doorframe, a foot already inside Spock’s apartment.
“I can. Would you care for a game of chess?”
“Maybe later,” said Jim with a smile that was far too sweet for the meaning behind those words. Jim moved fully into the apartment, right into Spock who automatically caught him around the waist.
Spock moved slowly, savoring the feel of Jim against him as he pushed his hands under the red cadet jacket and dragged his parted lips across the pulse in Jim’s neck. He moved his mouth upwards sucking lightly at Jim’s earlobe.
Jim immediately gripped at Spock harder, fingertips digging into his shoulders.
Spock pushed Jim’s jacket down his shoulders so he could get at somewhere he could bite. The pull to take, own, and wreck Jim already overtaking him.
Even after they had both come Spock was still skin hungry. He couldn’t keep his mouth or hands off of Jim.
Jim laughed. “Miss me?”
It had been fifteen days since their last encounter, a drawback to letting Jim initiate their encounters.
“Yes,” said Spock into the curve of his shoulder.
Jim inhaled sharply. He curled his hand around the back of Spock’s neck. “I just never know when you’ll be cool with me showing up.”
“Always. I value your company.”
Jim looked a little stunned.
“If it will encourage your presence I will give you the access code to my quarters.”
Jim’s mouth dropped open.
“You--what? You won’t mind if I just show up even if it’s just for chess or talking or something.”
“Not at all. That sounds pleasant.”
Spock had had some doubts about making this move, but the purely happy look on Jim’s face was well worth it.
CHRISTOPHER PIKE
Chris Pike had to suppress a sigh as he open up a message from Jennifer Yarns. It had definitely been a mistake flirting with her at that Starfleet function. Chris skimmed through the complaints and gossip about various department heads and Starfleet personnel. For some reason Jen thought Chris had any sway over any of these matters or even cared was beyond him. Chris stopped short when Professor Spock’s name appeared in the body of the message.
During the annual reading of Starfleet policy to Professors during the reading that Professors are not to engage in relations with Cadets Professor Spock appeared to be rather twitchy. And Chris, before you tell me Vulcans do not get twitchy let me remind you of all my qualifications in Communications. I know how to recognize a twitchy Vulcan when I see one. You, of course, already know my feelings on this policy but policy is policy and I would hate to see anything tarnish a career as bright as Spock’s. I trust Spock to be discreet but who knows what this cadet he’s carrying on with is like. I don’t have any sort of relationship with Spock beyond having been his teacher a few times. He looks up to you. I’d appreciate it if you would talk to him before anything... untoward occurs. And I apologize if I was just imagining the twitchiness! You will have to let me know how that goes.
This time Chris’s sigh was audible. Jen would never let up on him now. He rubbed his temples.
------
Chris strode swiftly towards Spock’s personal quarters determined to get this over with as swiftly and painlessly as possible. To his surprise he caught Spock just as he was keying his passcode into his own door.
“Professor Spock!” Chris called out and quickened his pace.
Spock paused and turned. “Captain Pike. How may I assist you?”
Pike noted that Spock made no move to enter his apartment or invite Chris in.
“May I come in?” He gestured at Spock’s door. “This is a matter that would be better not discussed in public.”
He watched Spock try to work out what he wanted to talk about “Perhaps another time, as I am rather busy.”
“I too am on a busy schedule. It will only take a few minutes.”
Spock nodded sharply and opened his door. His apartment was empty. Pike wouldn’t have noticed the almost imperceptible loosening of Spock’s shoulders if he hadn’t been looking for it. Spock was relieved. Chris’ suspicions grew.
“I apologize for bringing this subject up because I know how seriously you take Starfleet policy,” Chris began, “but it would be worse not to say anything at all and run into problems somewhere down the line.”
Spock’s eyebrows were almost touching the straight line of his bowl cut. “To what exactly are you referring, if I may enquire?”
“A communications professor noted that you had an odd reaction during the policy reading regarding Professor and Cadet relationships.”
Spock stiffened and said nothing.
“It may seem invasive, but it is custom to look for odd reactions during the policy readings, so as to avoid future problems for Starfleet. You should know that I trust your judgement in your personal relationships. But Starfleet is a rigorous program. Cadets come under extreme pressure and can sometimes crack under that pressure in unexpected ways. I would hate to see you having to defend yourself at a hearing against a former lover.”
Spock opened his mouth to retort but a small noise from the bathroom caught both of their attentions. Spock suddenly seemed to be doing his best to impersonate a statue. Pike sighed and started towards the bathroom ignoring Spock’s “Captain please--”
Chris opened the door not sure what to expect. But a shower damp Jim Kirk sitting on the edge of the bathtub, grinning up at him in nothing but his boxers hadn’t even registered as a possibility.
“Hey Chris,” he said.
Chris rolled his eyes, stepped into the bathroom and closed the door behind him.
“You need to stop seeing him.”
“Why? You finally decide you want me and aren’t up for sharing?” He winked salaciously.
Chris didn’t even want to touch that one.
“Look, Spock is incredibly smart and talented and so are you. You are both going places in Starfleet and are probably give me more than a few headaches along the way. Neither of you can afford to have anything fuck that up. Especially not this early in your careers. Spock can’t afford be seen as someone who takes advantage of his students and you can’t afford to be seen as someone who is only sleeping their way to the top.”
“Pretty sure that’s what people already think about me.” Jim said with a lazy shrug. Chris had to suppress the urge to slap him.
“But then they’d have proof and that’s all you’d be to them.” Some venom must have leaked into his voice because Jim’s shoulders sagged and he lost some of that cocky bravado.
“I can’t dump him,” Jim said in a small voice.
Pike leaned back against the wall, regarding Jim. “Does he know how you feel about him?”
“Maybe?”
“Well that might be something you want to work on.”
Jim looked up at him a little startled. “You--?”
“Wait. Let me ask you something.”
Jim nodded.
“Are you really going to stick with this one?”
Jim nodded again.
“Then please try to be discreet until you graduate. No telling anyone, not even your closest friends. We are never going to speak of this again for the next year. Understand?”
“Yes. Thank you, sir.”
“Fuck off. I don’t want to see your face for a month.” Chris really did not want to be the secret keeper of this bizarre relationship.
Jim just laughed and nodded.
Chris walked briskly out of the bathroom, to the door passed Spock who was still in the exact same spot Chris had left him in. Chris turned back to him right before he opened the door.
“You really need to work on suppressing your twitching if you’re going to successfully keep this relationship a secret for the next year or so.”
LEONARD MCCOY
It was the start of the weekend and for the first time in what was probably a month Leonard had the day off from the Academy clinic and no tests on Monday. He was more than ready to go out and have a couple (okay, maybe a few more than a couple) of drinks with some friends. So when he walked into the dorm he was reasonably upset by the site that greeted him.
“Goddamit Jim!”
Jim looked up all startled big blue eyes from the various PADDs spread around the table.
“What are you doing studying? We have to leave in fifteen minutes. I think everyone’s already down there. Come on get dressed.”
Jim held up a finger. “Give me a minute and I’ll take you down to the physics department. I think they may be able to get back to whatever universe you came from.”
“Ha ha. Seriously, get changed. We’re going out.”
“Who are you? And where were you last weekend when I didn’t have a shit ton of studying to do?”
“Do it tomorrow.” Leonard pulled off his cadet reds and went searching through his closet for a pair of jeans and a casual top.
“I can’t. Have a date tomorrow.”
“So blow them off. Reschedule.” He found a suitable pair of pants and tugged them on.
Jim made a face. “No. He’s been really busy too we haven’t been able to see each other in over a week. I don’t want to reschedule.”
Leonard paused in buttoning up his shirt to look at Jim. “Speaking of alternate universes...”
“Fuck off.”
“No really. You’re prioritizing your schedule so you can spend more time with someone you really care about. Jim that’s--”
“Okay you can stop there.”
“No I was just going to say that’s nice. I’m happy for you, man.” Leonard patted him on the shoulder before moving on to look for a comb.
“...Thanks.”
“So when do I get to meet this guy?”
“Umm well, I don’t know about that.”
“Really? Gaila had said you had been tightlipped about your new significant other. But I can’t even meet him? Are suddenly ashamed--”
“No, no nothing like that. You know I love you Bones. It’s just well,” Jim ran a hand through his hair nervously, “you can meet him after I graduate.”
“What? Oh. A professor? Oh, Jim are you sure?”
“I--yeah. Yes. I know what I’m doing. Well, not actually. But I’m trying. Pike knows, but if it gets out well that’d be bad.”
“That’s an understatement. Jim--”
“I’m happy Bones. Let me be happy. I’ll make some time to go out with you next week, okay?”
Leonard reached out to pat Jim on the shoulder again or something, he wasn’t sure before withdrawing his hand.
“Okay. Okay, Jim.”
AMANDA GRAYSON
Over the comm link Amanda could tell her son had gone through all the topics he wished to discuss with her and was getting ready to bid her farewell.
Even though over a week had passed since Sarek had told her that Spock had asked him about the specifics of the link between bondmates and the potential danger of accidental bonding Amanda still wasn’t sure how to broach the subject with her son. But she did know that she didn’t want to end the conversation still wondering.
“Spock are you seeing anyone? In a romantic sense. Dating?” Smooth Amanda, very smooth, she thought.
Spock, however, barely blinked. “Father has informed you of my queries concerning the link between bondmates.”
“Of course.”
“I am, as you would say, seeing someone. I have been doing so for eight months and one week.”
Amanda knew her surprise was evident on her face. “Is there a reason this is the first I am hearing of this? And Spock, you know if you feel you have found your bondmate in this person you do not have to wait until your Pon Farr, if in fact you will have one, to be bonded.”
“I am aware. I must apologize if I have offended you by not sharing this information with you. I have been wary of doing so because our relationship must remain somewhat clandestine because--”
Amanda grew concerned, she couldn’t remember the last time she had since her son hesitate.
“Because relationships between Professors and Cadets are frowned upon.” The last part was rushed.
“I see. Well when does your significant other graduate?”
“He will graduate at the end of this scholarly year.”
“Well, I look forward to making his acquaintance then.”
Spock looked relieved, Amanda allowed herself a small smile.
JIM KIRK
Jim was in one of his top five places to be: Spock’s bed. With one of his top five favorite people: Spock. In one of his top five favorite states of being: post-orgasmic and naked tangled up with another post-orgasmic and naked person.
Basically Jim was pretty fucking happy. But also Jim being Jim he had a difficult time keeping his mouth shut and just enjoying the moment.
“So what’s it like in here?” Jim asked tapping Spock’s forehead with his pointer finger. Jim had a leg threaded through both of Spock’s and they were pretty much nose to nose so Jim had a really nice up close view of what he though of as Spock’s ‘Why is this bizarre human asking such an incomprehensible question?’-face.
“Clarify, please,” Spock said, and bent slightly to kiss Jim’s neck.
“Oh, hey. Well you can feel impressions of my thoughts when we’re...” He searched for the right word.
“Making love?” Spock suggested.
“Ew no. Never say that again. Fucking. When we’re fucking.”
“Fucking,” Spock repeated.
And Jim suddenly couldn’t stop himself from sliding their mouths together. “Yeah, fucking,” he breathed against Spock’s lips. “What was I saying?”
“I am sure I have no idea.”
“Oh yeah! So is what you feel more like a progression for logical steps to having really awesome sex or is it just a mess of sensations and wanting, like my brain?”
Spock paused and thought for a moment before answering. “What I feel is difficult to articulate. When we are...fucking,” Jim shivered and Spock ran his thumb along his cheekbone, “I feel too much.”
“Too much,” Jim repeated.
“I would show you,” Spock tapped Jim’s psi-points lightly with one finger. “But I believe the depth of my feeling for you would lead to tying us together.”
“You mean bonding?” Jim knew that Spock cared about him a great deal, but he never would have thought--never would have let himself think that he would want Jim like that.
Spock let out a breath. “Yes.”
“Oh. And that’s something that you don’t want to happen?”
“No.”
Jim dug his nails into his palm to distract himself from what that no made him feel.
Spock brushed his fingers soothingly through Jim’s hair, “If we were bonded it would be far to difficult for me to continue to keep our relationship a secret as we much. However I must warn you, as soon as you graduate it will be become extremely difficult for me to hold back.”
“Okay, good.” Jim couldn’t stop smiling
Spock frowned slightly. “Sometimes I do not understand your responses.”
“Yeah I know.” Jim rolled on top of Spock. “Round two?”
Spock gripped his hips lightly. “I am amenable to the suggestion.”
NYOTA UHURA
Uhura leaned against the edge of the bar and looked on as Gaila eagerly watched Jim down his sixth shot of the night.
“So Jim,” Uhura asked leaning forward, turning up the charm. “How come you didn’t come out with us last night. Hot date?”
“Hot like you wouldn’t believe,” Jim responded without missing a beat.
Gaila and Uhura exchanged grins over his head as he leaned forward to signal the bartender for another shot.
“Anyone we know?” Gaila asked.
Just as Jim opened his mouth to respond, a large hand clapped down on his shoulder. It was his good friend Leonard McCoy who Uhura could have sworn was on the dance floor with a hot blond a second ago.
“Jim, I’m leaving. Walk me back so I don’t get mugged.”
Jim threw his head back and laughed. “You can’t fool me. You just want me to come back to the room with you so you can take advantage of me.” Jim fluttered his eyelashes ridiculously.
“Now there’s that intellect that’s keeping you at the top of your classes. How about it?”
“Yeah, I’ll walk you back.”
Leonard helped Jim up from the bar stool. Uhura narrowed her eyes at him. “Don’t think I don’t know what you’re doing.”
“Don’t think I don’t know what you two are doing,” he shot back. “Knock it off. Jim keeps secrets for a reason.”
They walked off and Gaila slumped down at the bar. “Secrets are stupid.”
“You think keeping our relationship secret is fun.”
Gaila hummed in agreement. “Want to have sex in the bathroom?”
“Sure.” Uhura finished her drink in one swig. “Let’s go.”
