Hikaru didn’t know where he was. The walls were sleek and shiny bright and there were adults all wearing solid color shirts looking down at him. Some were barking out orders. All their faces were tight and unsmiling. He didn’t know what he had done wrong, didn’t know where he was. All he knew was that these people were unhappy with him.

He clenched his fists and bit his bottom lip, because he was a big boy and he wouldn’t cry for no reason. Except he was really really scared. He had never seen any of these people before, had never been in any building like this one. Where were his daddy and his mama? Why did they leave him here with this people who didn’t like him? He was trembling and when he felt water forming in his eyes he squeezed them shut to prevent the tears.

Suddenly soothing hands were stroking his hair, “Hey buddy, it’s okay, you’re fine, you’re safe. It’s okay.” Hikaru let himself untense at the soothing words. “That’s it buddy, you’re going to be fine.”

Hikaru blinked his eyes open to see a man in a yellow shirt with blue eyes kneeling in front of him. He didn’t look mad at him, he looked like a nice person. “Hi, I’m Hikaru, what’s your name?”

The man beamed at him. “It’s nice to meet you Hikaru. I’m Jim.” Hikaru scrubbed his hands across his face trying to remove the traces of tears, when really he only succeeded in making his face pinker. Jim smiled fondly down at the little boy.

“Do you know where you are Hikaru?”

“No,” he admitted in a small voice, looking down at his shoes.

“Hey, that’s okay. I know this is strange for you. We’re on the USS Enterprise, it’s starship, I’m the captain. And as the captain it’s my job to make sure everyone on my ship is safe.”

Hikaru perked up. “We’re on a starship?”

“Yes, we are.”

“That’s so cool.” He bounced excitedly. “I always wanted to be on a starship but my parents said they don’t let kids on…Do you know where my parents are Jim?”

“At your home, in San Francisco.” Hikaru’s lower lip trembled. “Hey, buddy, can you do something for me?”

“Maybe, what?”

“It won’t be long before everything will be back to normal for you. And I just need you to be brave for me for just a little longer. Can you do that for me?”

Hikaru nodded seriously and Jim couldn’t resist ruffling his hair, chuckling when he ducked away from it.

“Hey, so listen, you got here pretty late in the day. It’s my dinner time. Would you like to eat?”

Hikaru nodded vigorously and Jim stood up, brushing off his knees. “What do you like to eat. You can have anything you want.”

“Anything?” He asked eyes wide.

“Within certain nutritional parameters.” Jim replied, turning and gesturing for Hikaru to follow him.

Hikaru frowned slightly, he didn’t know what a parameters was, but he knew what nutritional was. He followed close behind Jim overwhelmed by the amount of people they passed in the hallway that stared down at him curiously. He wanted to hold Jim’s hand for comfort, but he wasn’t sure if that was being brave. The heroes he knew about didn’t hold anyone’s hand unless they were in love with them.

Jim noticing the small boy’s discomfort at the strange surroundings reached down and took his hand. Hikaru latched on gratefully, if Jim held people’s hands then it could be brave. Because Jim was a starship captain and they were always brave.

“So Hikaru, have any idea what you want for dinner?”

“A giant chocolate cookie.” He ventured.

Jim laughed. “You can have desert, but only after some sort of dinner food. Don’t want you getting sick on me.”

“I will not.” Hikaru exclaimed indignantly.

“Well what sort of food do you like? Dinner food.”

Hikura considered it. “Everything. Except peanut butter and jelly.”

“Are you allergic to peanuts?”

“No, peanut better and jelly is boring. I don’t like boring food.”

Jim laughed. “Got it, no boring food. I think we can work something out.”

Dinner was fun, the food was not boring and Jim’s friends were nice. Crazy, but nice. Too soon it was time for him to go to bed, and Jim took him a room. Well, at first Jim called it Hikaru’s room, but it must be a guest room he decided.

Hikaru was sleepy and his limbs were heavy as he brushed his teeth and changed into pajamas. When he came out, Jim was waiting for him. He climbed up into the bed and Jim tucked him in on and turned off the lights. He brushed a kiss across Hikaru’s forehead and turned to leave.

Jim was almost to the door, before the overwhelming terror at being utterly alone in this strange place hit Hikaru again. Except now it was worse because it was dark. He couldn’t see if any strange things were lurking, they could get him without even trying.

“Jim,” he called out panic in his voice, before he could be left all alone in the darkness.

Jim was at his side in an instant. “What’s wrong buddy?”

“I have to tell you a secret.”

“What is it?”

“I can’t be brave when all the lights are gone and I’m all by myself.”

“Oh, that’s okay, buddy. Lots of people have that problem." "

"Really?"

"Really. Listen, I'll tell you a secret too."

"What is it?"

"Sometimes I have that problem, too.”

“But you’re a starship captain.”

“Even starship captains are scared sometimes.”

Hikaru digested that in silence.

“Would it help if I stayed?” Jim asked him, noticing that the little boy was still tense.

“Yes.” Hikaru said emphatically.

“Okay,” Jim said taking off his boots and he climbed under the covers fully clothed.

Hikaru hesitantly scooted backwards across the bed until his back was against Jim’s chest. Warm arms came around and encircled him. Knowing Jim would never let anything hurt him Hikaru was able to fall asleep snuggled in his arms, soothed by the steady rise and fall of Jim’s breathing.

When Hikaru awoke again that night, it was in his adult bodies in full possession of his memories. He remembered everything, from the aliens giving him something they said would help get in touch with his young soul to his captain generally being the best buddy a scared six year old in a strange place could have.

He was still encircled in Jim’s arms and felt when Jim stirred awake behind him. Hikaru rolled over. “Hi, Jim.”

“Hey,” was the mumbled sleepy response. He could feel Jim's soft, sleep tussled hair against his neck.

“Well, this wasn’t exactly how I had envisioned getting you into my bed.”

Jim stirred, looking up at Hikaru. “You’ve-you mean…Hikaru, are you saying that you want me?”

“Um, yes.”

“Awesome.” Was the response he got before a hand wrapped around the back of his neck and full lips were against his own. Hikaru tried to deepen the kiss, but Jim pulled back.

“Nope, that’s all you get tonight. I had to deal with not offending aliens while trying to figure out what was wrong with you, bizarre Starfleet paper work, and entertaining a six year old. I need my beauty sleep.”

Hikaru grumbled. Jim Kirk was finally in his bed and they were both adults, how was he supposed to sleep?

“If you go to sleep now, I’ll blow you in the shower in the morning.”

“I hope you know that that is disturbingly similar to the style of bargaining you used to get me to eat my vegetables.”

“Is it working?”

“Yes,” Hikaru admitted before pulling him close and falling asleep tangled up in Jim.
