"the bard's tale" was funny in a way y'all'd enjoy. i'm not sure exactly where it falls on the "killing people" scale for you, though: it's stock fantasy, and the opponents include vikings and druids (though most are animals or monsters of various sorts).
"baldur's gate 2, dark alliance" is even more stock fantasy (it's d&d), but we found it awesome because we could both play together at the same time.

The Katamari games. Difficult to describe exactly why they are fun, but I think you won't be disappointed. The original Katamari Damancy is probably hard to find now, but the sequel (both for the PS2), We Love Katamari, is probably not too hard. The new Beautiful Katamari is just out, but I don't know for what systems, other than the 360.
The basic idea is, you roll a ball around, picking up stuff that sticks to it. With more stuff, you get bigger. You need to hit a certain size within a certain time limit. Which doesn't begin to describe the charm of it all.
Yes! The ball game! I liked the original better then the second. I must admit that the music gets annoying after a while, but it's not necessary for game play, so turning the game noise off and listening to a cd works fine.
I liked Gauntlet: Dark Legacy and both Pandemonium games. Gauntlet is like the arcade game if you've ever seen or played that. Pandemonium is similar to the original 3 Mario games or Zelda... run around, collect coins, avoid monsters or jump on them to "pop" them. The graphics in Pandemonium are pretty trippy sometimes. Only downside is that there isn't a huge amount of game play time in them like Final Fantasy, but enough to keep you occupied for a bit.
Unfortunately, I don't think any of them are still in print, though you can find them pretty easily on ebay or the amazon marketplace. As for new games... I really have no idea.
On second thought, after reading J's thoughts... I'll rescind my recommendation of Gauntlet.
I know a couple good ones on the xbox, but that doesn't really help, I guess. I don't think they made Fable on PS2... Parasite Eve maybe? Though that one was a bit on the resident evil side of things. I liked the story though. It was an original ps game, I believe.
Guitar Hero! because everyone loves rocking out with a fake plastic guitar in your hands. I'd probably start with Rocks the 80s, but you can't really go wrong with any of them.
Uh, more along the lines of the games you listed, the Lego Star Wars games are surprisingly good, but a little short unless you're obsessive about collecting everything. Both games were recently repackaged into a single game, which gives you more play time for your buck.
Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is less cartoony than Wind Waker, but it's a nigh perfect gaming experience. And the Gamecube version isn't flipped, so Link is left-handed the way he's supposed to be. I haven't played Okami for the PS2, but it's highly regarded and in a similar vein.
You should also look at the Ratchet and Clank series.
At this stage, most of the action in new games is for XBox360 and Wii, but there's still tons of good stuff for the older systems.
Okami is *gorgeous*. The pacing is a bit laid-back, at least at first (I haven't finished it yet), but it's SO pretty and the gameplay is interesting so far.
Definitely Okami. We don't play games but some friends of ours do and they showed it to us one day, and it was really neat. I can ask for more ideas...
Final Fantasy 6 was released for PS not too long ago, if I'm not mistaken, and had a very interesting story to it. The Paper Mario games (GC) are surprisingly fun as well, and Super Monkey Ball is hilarious.
I definitely support Okami, though I haven't played it myself.
Jon might remember me playing Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne a few years back. I really like the Shin Megami Tensei line (and could bring down the one I'm playing now, Persona 3, if you wanted to see a Japanese high school simulation where at midnight the monsters come out).
I will also bring down Baten Kaitos, Disgaea, and Kingdom Hearts for you to consider, all of which I've enjoyed (and finished).
