I was just reading a book wherein a woman died. She was the neighbor of the protagonist, and would pop in and out of the story. Basically, she just kept saying that she was trying to complete her memoirs. And then the main character and his wife noticed a weird smell in the hallway of their apartment

I guess you shouldn't engage in compromising positions in the first place. My roommates are so seclusive, we would have to wait for a terrible smell before investigating.
