The press of hot tar against his belly, the smell of death and rotting flesh on the breeze, all of his senses were hyper-focused. It was like he was back in the army, back where everything made sense.

A deep breath, the stillness between heartbeats, then the jolt of the rifle stock against his shoulder. Far below, in the street, a zombie's head exploded. Gaping teeth and white glazed eyes disappeared into a cloud of blood spatter and skull fragments.

"Feel better?" Jensen asked.

Cougar twisted to look over his shoulder. Jensen was sitting cross-legged, leaning against the roof access, a smirk on his lips and a computer balanced across his thighs.

Cougar nodded and turned back to his gun, finger caressing the trigger guard as he used the scope to search for another target. He zeroed in on a thin, mocha skinned woman, in a ripped grey tank top and baggy cargoes. She had her long black hair pulled into a ponytail. The resemblance to Aisha was superficial, but it was enough.

He still hadn't forgotten her betrayal. He took aim at the woman's heart. The woman's ponytail fluttered like a flag. Another moment and the breeze died down. A shot to the heart, then a second later a shot to the head. She fell to the ground a broken heap of limbs.

"I think that's enough for today."

Cougar's rifle jerked, but he'd had enough control to take his finger off the trigger. He hadn't heard Jensen come up behind him, too focused on his target practice.

Come on, Jolene's goanna be pissed if we miss dinner.

Cougar nodded once sharply and listened as Jensen moved away. He wouldn't push and Cougar was grateful for that. He's was losing his edge, losing his mind with the , but at least this, the simple peace of hunting was still his. He wasn't ready too loose it yet.

He waited until the door back into the skyscraper they'd converted into their home base clanged shut, before slowly getting to his knees. He lay the rifle across his knees and watched as the sun set over the ruined city of New Jerusalem.

Then he picked up his rifle and went inside. Jensen was waiting for him.
