After I saw Fahrenheit 9/11, a woman said, "I feel like we've [the audience] really made a difference."
I wanted to say, "Bitch, you watched a movie. You got entertained. Getting entertained changes nothing!" I actually think Olberman et al. make it more difficult to change the status quo because they give people the impression that being civilly active means watching television, thus making it less likely they'll do anything, or if they do anything, it will more likely be getting into an argument with a conservative, which will only succeed in making the conservative defensive and therefore move even further to the right.
my issue was having had no idea this was even slipping through.
it also makes me feel weird because: a.) Kerry/Kennedy usually vote how i would like, ie against this shit legislation b.) How are we supposed to act on this legislation before it's passed when we have no idea what's in it, by their own admition many of these dudes haven't even read it themselves.
i think 'just watching' in this case can have the effect of helping to animate the voting public, granted they're going to vote 2 party and it won't effect fundamental systemic change but i would argue having a democratic (or less insane and myopic repub) would have prevented the passage of these bills, a foriegn policy most of the world regards as a regressive failure and not led the country to the shit filled crossroads we're at today.
incidentally, i have a cd for you, where to mail it dude?
