I'm confused....

So, I'm at work, right, and I'm compiling this big survey we did at the end of a management course for our upper level managers. There were 151 yes or no questions on this survey. At the end, they were asked to tally up their yes's and write that number on the top of the sheet to make everyone's life easier. Most of the managers decided to count ( Read more... )

so my only thought on the whole thing is, why bother "< >" if you're doing it by hand. if you're going to write on the back and show how mathmatically disinclined you are, why wouldn't you just stick with the good old, functional, nondescript " - "

I was wondering the exact same thing. The only possible conclusion I came to was habit. This person is either an engineer or an accountant (actually, Dasha, does accounting notation use the brackets or is it only engineering?) and uses this style of notation all the time. Either way, it's even sadder, because of all professions, those two should be extremely proficient at math, or at least enough to do it in their heads.
