From what I hear, people outside the fundementalist muslim world are usually able distinguish between an American and the infuriating policies of the U.S. government. Thanks for the input!
If you like to probe your comfort level, I say go for Argentina. You sound more inclined to Italy, but I think Argentina would challenge you more. If either of you speak Spanish, there is a lot of opportunity in Argentina to do get off the beaten path and do non-touristy stuff. It depends what you want out of the vacation.
Also, on a side note, if you like staying in hostels, Scotland has absolutely great ones.
Wow, that's a really tough choice. Both places would be totally amazing to visit.
On a practical (and possibly superficial) level, I hate spending too much time en route to places, and I hate dealing with airports. So I would lean towards a situation where I could get around easily. So I would either choose Italy, or figure out a way to minimize traveling when in Argentina.
Re: the hating America thing: when I was in Europe, total strangers would ask me my opinion of George Bush, but people do seem to be able to seperate individuals from the governments that govern them.
I've always wanted to go to Italy, so that would be my vote. Make sue you take a gondola ride in Venice! Manda (do you remember her?) went this summer and loved it.
