I spent some time with Brad and Kathryn and friends tonight watching Superbowl ads (not the game itself, just the adverts, using a MythTV box with its ad-skipping polarity reversed). Yeah I saw the phone ad too. This is the best advertising and placement that money can buy. Shiny shiny coin coin also cracked me up in a sad way. Our government is the the best that money can buy, and our medical system is too. Ever think that the ghostly hand of capitalism is maybe leading us down a less than ideal path? especially if he's going around chucking phones into the unseeing eyes of his subjects.

I don't really believe in the downward motion of values, or that really expensive superbowl ads would be the place to find consistently great art. It was more intra-cultural shock than anything else. There's a bit of me that thinks "wow, that was a spectacularly expensive waste of time", but who says really expensive things have to be any good? I think enjoying them because they're expensive is probably exactly the level that one should enjoy them, and I don't really expect them to be anything more.
