Your canon sounds amazing. And I'm going to put two of my boys down in this category.
First, Jono here, who lost his powers. That would be one of those things that trails off into the ether, since you can't really take a walk and dig them up again. Likewise, his humanity, which is a neat little polar opposite of the first one, but he misses it just as much. A more solid sort of thread would lead to Didi/Death, because losing her still eats at him to this day.
... I could probably keep going with a list of things like self-esteem and his innocence and a large portion of his dignity, but they're kind of like an afterthought as opposed to the rest, and they're all fade-offy stuff too, so you can take or leave 'em. The boy's a ball of issues and I know it.
And then Jim Hawkins, whose father took off on him when he was a kid. It's been one of those driving force/sore points for him ever since, so I figure it's a big enough deal to deserve a mention here.

It is indeed fabulous!
Zinzi's most likely to note the number of fading off things on Jono and then possibly pay attention to anything else, at least for awhile. Jim's father she might take more note of, and the nature of it if not the precise details.
While I've got you on the line, as it were, you down with Zinzi making her arrival during Jim's shift at the Portalocity office? Because the first day of a weekend of gendershiftiness is totally the best time to introduce her. ;D

I'd love to have her come through during Jim's shift! He'd be especially intrigued by the Sloth, I think. Animals that he's never seen before are exciting!

Okay, so this book sounds awesome.
Does death count as loss? I can understand how people who have gone missing would count, because no one knows what happened to them, but does regular (or violent or unexpected) death count?

Comment 1: This book sounds awesome.
Comment 2: I actually was kvetching at Elaine on IM earlier tonight about how one of the major hangups of a plot I'm thinking about doing is...how to find a missing object that the characters don't have any idea where it is. So. IS IT OKAY IF I E-MAIL YOU ABOUT THAT?
