The hard drive on my laptop is dead. Ironically, I named my computer 'Flamel' (I like alchemy names) in the hopes that it would last a long time. It's still under warranty--I bought the thing last June--but I hadn't backed up my data since, oh, before I went to Hawaii I think ( Read more... )

Have you considered remote backup? There's iCloud, and here's a good rundown of some general remote backup services: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2288745,00.asp. Also, if the Apple Store can't recover your data, gillware.com probably can, although it's quite expensive ($300 - $1100).

I do have my lab data in Dropbox--because I regularly share it with my advisor and labmate. But Dropbox doesn't have enough storage for all of my photos and stuff.

My sister has an old Time Capsule that works fairly well that she's going to pass on--she bought a larger capacity one recently. So I should be getting one for free.
