I don't play so much Ani Difranco around my head and computer these days, but when I run into a song one time or another, it's like a little zen experience to read the text and hear the tune and her voice in the back of my head. I'd dare say it feels better than to hear the real thing, because she/her voice makes it more disturbing- which is the way it's supposed to be. That should be a measure of something... when you come to prefer to rewind a song in your head than to hear it from a speaker. One way it's comforting, the other way - disturbing, or provoking or something else. It's a lot like praying in arabic and thinking about the general meaning/theme of things versus hearing it out loud in it's little comprehensiveness followed by a few comments from the imam (priest), that I may even agree with but still feel them completely external and strange.
for some reason today i'm enthralled by your phrase "it's a lot like praying in arabic" and the concept of it. (it being speaking to a higher power in another tongue? i'm not sure.) makes me wish i wasn't monolingual, though.
Hah now even I'm not sure. The concept isn't so much about an unintelligible tongue (because I'm familiar with the meaning/translation for the handfull of verses that I know in the first place), but about how calming/therapeutic/pleasant small texts are, when known by heart and chanted sometimes, at different times throughout your life
