My friend just told me that they tried to hook it up without a filter and they got mixed results. His first apartment it didn't work and that's because the cabling was old and the cables were routed in a way in which they happened sequentially and not absolutely independent lines, so they received interference. It did work for sometime but it was absolutely frustrating till he got the filter. The connection became more reliable. Also in the current place, he had DSL at first and it worked almost as well without filter as it did with one.

But he suggested that cable had far more superior speeds and he realizes that after having moved to cable finally after 2 years. I am not sure if that was of help but that's what I could locate for now.

I was just informed that modems come with in-built filters as well. So you could get one of those.
