What's a good way to elide over the fact that I've been off work for a year without saying it was for maternity leave? I'm not getting any calls for any of the jobs I've applied for and I'm afraid one of the problems is that I keep telling people I've just come off of maternity leave, but I also don't want to look like a bum.

call it parental leave?

your year of self-employment? Although, "self-employed" people looking for real work are often flakes.

if you call your job history part of the resume something like "Relevant Experience", then it looks like you've just been at a shit job for the past year. Which may be worse. or better.

"Health issues?"

"Educational leave" (It's been pretty educational.

I wouldn't mention it and see if they even noticed. The job market over here is so bad that tons of people have been off for a year or more.

Didn't you freelance a bit? Expand on that - in addition to the 'experience' area on your CV, include a projects area and pad the dates so you get more coverage.
