Your argument focuses solely one "what ifs" and circumstance.
You're arbitrarily defining "true" justice and "true" mercy.
You're asserting a position that "justice" and "mercy" both call for as if they are absolutes and mixing collectivism and individualism together as you see fit.
I get that this all goes back to your whole "everything serves the greater good" philosophy, but that philosophy never did and never will hold. "Superficially", as you describe it, is the only level of justice and mercy that matter; the one that affects reality.
"True" justice and "true" mercy are merely extensions of superficial justice and mercy, i.e. looking beyond the immediate consequences of actions. Justice and mercy are often applied as though the ones impacted are in a vacuum and that their current state will have no impact on their future selves.
For your argument, if you'd like, altho it'd complicate things exponentially, you can throw in cases of false imprisonment as examples or failures of justice and mercy. Or the opposite, where it the imprisonment has made the person more than if they were held in prison (Nelson Mandella comes to mind).
Wow. I am so behind, I didn't know you got accepted into grad school. I've been super busy and now I feel partly guilty because I haven't congratulated you earlier. With that said, you better keep in touch!
