“ You remember the previous rift opening at the woods ?” Martha asked, Tosh already knowing from the records she’d accessed that Jack had been the one to deal with that alert.
“ According to the records there was a ‘clean up operation.’” The Doctor stated, as he looked over at the information Tosh had brought up on the on board computer. “ What did you do with them Captain ?” The obvious assumption, and accusation, were clear in the Time Lords voice and expression as he turned to look at the immortal.
Jack however ignored both the medic and Gallifreyan, tapping his comm. instead.
“ Ianto ?”
“ Jack, what’s wrong ?” Ianto instantly knew something wasn’t right from the tightness in his lovers’ voice.
“ Are you still at the Morgans’?”
Martha glanced at Tosh, mouthing a questioning ‘Morgans ?’ and received a small shrug of non-recognition from the technician.
“ Yes, just finishing up and then having a cup of tea before heading back to the Hub. Why ?”
“ Everything alright ? Nothing out of the ordinary ? No out of place or unidentified readings ?” Jack asked rather than answering Iantos’ question.
“ No. Everything is as it should be.” the Welshman reassured. “ What’s going on ?”
“ Nothing, hopefully.”
“ But ?” Ianto pushed tentatively, it was obvious to him that the immortal was rattled by something.
“ The rift opening is in the West Hill Wood area.” Jack paused hoping Ianto would make the connection with his current hosts that the Captain initially hadn’t. The immortal couldn’t help the slight upturn of his lips as the young Welshman responded, - ‘of course he’d get it’ thought Jack.
“ I assume you don’t think it’s a coincidence.” It wasn’t so much a question as a statement, and one phrased not to startle anyone within earshot his end.
“ No I don’t. From the information Tosh has managed to gather it seems like a controlled entry along the same trajectory and the landing is in the exact same spot.” Jack clarified.
“ I suppose you’ve revised the assumption that it’s an automated delivery device.”
“ Until we have a visual all bets are off.”
“ Sounds sensible.” Ianto agreed as he checked Donna and Dilys were still engrossed in chatting while preparing the refreshments, and that Evan remained outside gathering some home-grown vegetables as a gift for the visitors. Certain that he wasn’t about to be overheard the archivist added, “ As a precaution we’ll stay until you’re sure what you’re dealing with and if there’s any connection. I’ll extend the exterior scan here and let you know if anything out of the ordinary shows up.”
“ I’ll have Tosh check from here as well. It probably is nothing more than coincidence but...”
“...Better safe than sorry.” Ianto finished for the Captain, adding “ Be careful.”
“ Same to you. Don’t take any risks.”
“ You’re the one dealing with whatever came through, I’ve only got to face off Donna for the refreshments.” Ianto smiled at their hostess and his companion as they moved towards him to lay the table.
“ Let’s hope so.” Jack murmured before signing off to be immediately confronted by the Doctor.
“ I said what did you do with them ?” The Time Lords words dripping with accusation.
“ What do you want me to say Doc ? That they were locked up in the deep, dark recesses of the Hub and left to rot ? That they were experimented on and tortured ? Or that I killed them on sight and disposed of their bodies ? Well sorry to disappoint you. I told you that I’d changed Torchwood and I meant it. Even before I became leader I did what I could. The occupants of the ‘craft’ that came through before were a C’tylni couple on Glaxcia for a vacation. One moment they’d been cruising around the Aquatriplila the next they were here; battered, bruised, confused and scared but no threat. There wasn’t a way to return them so I set them up in a safe house until I could arrange new identities and get them assimilated in this time and world. They have been living here ever since.” Jack explained as he turned the SUV off the road and on to the rough track approaching the woods.
“ The Morgans.” Tosh guessed, her eyes meeting Jacks in the rear view mirror with the Captain giving her a small nod in confirmation.
“ I gather that’s where Ianto is.” Martha remarked thinking of the conversation they had just overheard part of, and looking to Jack for confirmation of her own, getting a ‘yes’ in response.
“ And Donna.” The Doctor added.
“ She’ll be fine, Ianto won’t let anything happen to her.” Jack stated with certainty.
“ And she travels with you Doctor so if anything does happen it’s not likely to be the first time.” Martha pointed out, giving the Time Lord a look that dared him to challenge her assessment.
“ That’s not the point. She’s my responsibility.” The Gallifreyan retorted.
“ I have a feeling if Donna could hear you right now she’d tell you that she’s a big girl more than capable of looking after herself and no-one’s responsibility but her own,” the medic replied.
Before the Doctor could reply Jack brought the SUV to a halt.
“ We’re on foot from here.” The Captain stated already opening his door to get out.
----------------------------------------------------------
“ Everything alright ?” Donna asked as she finished putting the plates down onto the table, while Dilys headed out to get Evan. The redhead had gathered Ianto was on the comms to the Captain as she and Dilys had approached, and hoped all was well with the others.
“ They’ve not killed each other yet have they ?” she added, only half jokingly as she took the seat next to the archivist.
“ Not yet but there’s still time ! “ Ianto replied exchanging a knowing glance and half grin with Donna before shifting his attention back to his PDA.
“ So everything alright ?” the Londoner queried again, noticing how focused Ianto suddenly was on the hand held device.
“ At the moment, but it seems as though the rift retrieval might be a little more complicated than first thought.”
“ They need any help ?” Donna asked, ready to get up and leave if the answer was yes.
“ No. They’re fine.” Ianto looked up, giving his new friend a reassuring look, adding “ If they need us Jack will let us know.”
“ So what might make their job ‘more complicated’ than they first thought , and what has suddenly got you so engrossed in that ?...” Donna motioned to the PDA her young companion was busy with. “ ...Spill.”
Although Ianto had only known Donna a matter of days he already knew that the look he was receiving from her was the one that ‘said’ she was not going to be fobbed off with a half answer or excuse. Not that he had intended to lie to her, after all if something happened he needed Donna up to speed not just for her own safety, but also to help if need be.
“ Whatever’s come through the rift has landed in the exact same spot as a previous object that came through.”
“ I take it that’s unusual ?”
“ Yes it is. Sure things ‘arrive’ in the same area, within feet, even inches of previous items, but the exact same spot... It also came in on the same trajectory...”
“ As if it was following what came through before.” Donna surmised.
“ It has Jack thinking it’s not just a coincidence.” Ianto added.
“ And from the look of you not just Jack. So what came through before ?”
Ianto didn’t speak, but looked out to where Dilys was now helping Evan finish up with the fresh produce.
“ Ooh...” Donna responded as she followed Iantos’ line of sight and understood, answering her own question, “....the Morgans’.”
“ Yes, and until the others can confirm what’s come through this time, and if there is any connection, we’ll stay here. I’ve extended the exterior scan as a precaution, and I’m sure between the remaining medical scans I need to do, and your natural charm, we will be able to extend our visit as needed.”
“ Not telling them then ?” Donna asked looking back to Ianto.
“ Not at the moment. Until we are sure what’s going on there’s no need to worry them unnecessarily.”
“ Fair enough, but it might not be something to worry about, it could be something good. Family, friends looking for them.” Donna considered.
“ Unlikely,” said Ianto. “ The reason the Morgans excepted their situation so well when they found that they were stranded here was because they had no family, and few friends, none of which would have had the resources to search for them. The chances that it’s a ‘rescue party’ are very slim.”
Any further discussion on the matter was halted as their hosts re-entered the kitchen.
