Chapter 50.

“ What the hell do you think you are doing ?!” Donna said totally stunned as she watched Gwen enter the kitchen gun drawn and aimed at Ianto.

“ You’re asking me that ?” Gwen sounded incredulous. “ Shouldn’t you be asking that of Ianto?”

“ Why ? He’s not training a gun on his teammate !” Donna couldn’t quite believe what she was seeing.

“ I wouldn’t be if he wasn’t in cahoots with the alien !”

“ What ?” came in stereo from an equally confused Donna and Ianto.

“ Cooper just calm the fuck down will you, and lower your gun before you shoot someone.” Said Owen making his presence known as he arrived next to Gwen.

“ No I won’t. You heard him just like I did; he was talking to the alien.” Torchwoods Police liaison kept her weapon trained on their archivist.

“ Of course I was,” Ianto couldn’t understand what the problem was, he hadn’t done anything out of the ordinary, just followed standard procedures. “ I was following protocol and establishing a line of communication.”

“ In its own language !” responded Gwen emphasising the last part.

“ Now you have totally lost the plot, he was speaking English just like the Xa’lk was, albeit the alien a little slower.” Donna defended her newest friend stunned by the Welshwoman’s actions.

“ No that was not English.” Gwen insisted.

“ Of course I was speaking English.”

“ Sorry Jonesy…” Ianto who had kept his focus on Gwen since her arrival into the kitchen now risked a glance to Owen as Torchwoods Doctor continued to speak “… but I have to agree with Cooper…” Gwen’s expression became tempered with smugness, “…that sure as hell didn’t sound like any version of the Queens English I’ve ever heard.”
Ianto and Donna looked at the latest arrivals into the kitchen stunned, as the tension in the room increased somewhat.

“ This isn’t the time for one of your pranks Owen.” Ianto said to the team Doctor, hoping that the medic was merely on the wind up, however badly timed it might be.

“ No prank Ianto.” The use of his proper name, the tone of voice and the look on Owens face told Ianto that Londoner wasn’t joking around.

“ But…” Ianto started, trying to make sense of what was happening. However he was interrupted by an American voice as the Captain and the Doctor entered the farmhouse via the backdoor.

“ Someone care to explain ?” Jack asked as he took in the sight before him. He had heard everything over the open comm and had no idea what Gwen was playing at, nor Owen come to that. What he had heard was Ianto following protocol once the Xa’lk had been contained, and Gwen’s insistence and Owens corroboration that Ianto hadn’t been speaking English didn’t make any sense. He had heard his lover and it had been English he had been speaking.

“ Ianto is working with the Xa’lk.” Gwen informed the Immortal, her gun still trained on her fellow countryman.

“ And why would you think that ? asked Jack calmly, not wanting to spook Gwen as he moved further into the kitchen which, although large, was rapidly becoming crowded.

“ Because he was talking to it in its own language and could have been saying anything at all to it. They could have been arranging anything!”

“ Could have but wasn’t, he was doing his job and everyone but you, Gwen, and Owen heard and understood what Ianto said.” The Immortal stated.

“ Actually Jack…” Tosh piped up over the comm as she and Martha now headed back to the SUV having finished at the ship and re-activated the shielding around both it and the safe haven.

Donna looked on; she had briefly considered zapping Gwen with the taser she was holding but doubted she’d reach her before the former policewoman realised what was happening, and Donna wasn’t going to risk the Welshwoman reflexively pulling the trigger and shooting Ianto, so she held back the urge and listened to the back and forth, taking in what was being said. Something was niggling at the back of her mind and as Tosh’s voice came over the comm the redhead smiled to herself as realisation hit her.

“ You didn’t hear English did you Tosh,” Donna stated more than asked, adding before the tech genius could answer, “But you Martha understood everything,” again more statement than question.

“ No I didn’t…” and “ Yes…” came through the comm from the ladies almost simultaneously as they replied to the Londoner.

“ Donna ?” Jack looked at where she stood a few feet from his lover.

“ The Tardis.” Donna said as if that would explain everything. “ She has really taken a shine to you Ianto.” She added winking at the Welshman.

“ What has that weird blue box got to do with anything ?” Gwen was becoming frustrated at what she saw as delaying tactics. It was clear that the Doctors travelling companion had a thing for Ianto and she was trying to distract them away from what Gwen saw as yet another betrayal by the archivist.

“ It has everything to do with it. When you travel with the Doc the Tardis kinda gets into your head, translates everything for you. Doesn’t matter where you are, what planet you’re on, you hear everything in your own language, our case English, and when you speak you hear it in your own head as English, but you are in fact speaking the language of whatever race or person you are talking to. Every one of us that’s travelled with the Doc heard Ianto and the Xa’lk talk in English, while the others only heard some alien chit chat that they didn’t understand.”

“ But Ianto hasn’t travelled with the Doctor so wouldn’t have that ability. Unless he has kept something else hidden from us.” Gwen finished pointedly. All her fellow co-workers well aware to what she was referring and Martha once again found herself wondering what was such a sore subject amongst the group.  Whatever it was it brought out a warning tone to Jacks voice as he said the former policewoman’s name.

“ No he hasn’t,” Donna carried on, ignoring the growing tension only increased by Gwen’s last comment. “ but like I said the Tardis has taken a real shine to Gorgeous and I’m betting she’s doing the instant translator thing like she does for the Docs companions when they are travelling with him or when they’re around her.”

“ Doc ?” It sounded plausible to Jack but he wanted confirmation of Donna’s theory from the Time Lord.

“ Ah, well it’s possible I suppose. Certainly explains the discrepancy between who heard what, but the Tardis has never done that before. She can expand the translator field around herself to incorporate those within her parameters but she has never before solely selected one individual who hasn’t been a companion with which to impart the translator ability.” The Doctor sounded a little confused by his ships apparent actions.

“ You’re just going to take their word for it !” The sound of Gwen’s voice refocused the attention of the group in the farmhouse to the woman still holding a gun on her teammate.

“ For the moment, yes.” Jack said trying to think of a way to get Gwen to at least lower her weapon, if not to totally put it away. “ It makes sense and …”

“ You would say that. Be on his side. What happened to not letting your personal relationship get in the way of the job a Jack ?” Gwen pointedly interrupted, glancing at the Immortal as she spoke.

“ I would be saying the same if it was any of you.” Jack stated honestly, though he doubted Gwen would totally believe him. In truth he would be saying the same if it was any of the others but internally he wouldn’t be having to control such a maelstrom of emotion as he was at the present.

Before the Welshwoman could respond, the focus of both the conversation and her aim spoke up.

“ Sir, we still have our alien visitor to process…,” Ianto hoped that Jack would pick up on his unspoken concern with regard to their visitor and the time that was passing , “… and as Gwen seems both unconvinced of Donna’s theory and unlikely to lower her weapon any time soon may I suggest that you restrain me…”

Various voices in shocked disagreement interrupted the Welshman who ignored them all and merely continued.

“…and transport both myself and the Xa’lk back to the Hub where our visitor can be safely secured for processing and perhaps the Tardis could confirm if Donna’s assessment of my apparent xenoglossy is correct.”

“ Xenowhat ?” Gwen asked the strain in her arms at maintaining her aim beginning to show.

“ Xenoglossy, being able to correctly speak a language you don’t know, never learnt….What ?” Owen took in the surprised expressions of those around him. “It’s a medical phenomenon and I am a Doctor you know.”

“ So rumour has it.” Donna couldn’t help herself.

“ Oy, can it red.” Owen responded.

“ Getting back to the matter at hand, “ Jack’s tone was all authority and refocused those in the farmhouse to the current situation, “ Would that satisfy you Gwen ?” The Immortals focus was fixed on the Welshwoman.

Gwen considered for a moment. Even she knew they couldn’t remain here indefinitely and the thought of Ianto being restrained and contained was certainly appealing.

“ He is restrained and transported back to the Hub in the same vehicle as me and held in the cells until I’m convinced he isn’t involved with the Xa’lk.”

The Captain reluctantly nodded his assent. Jack was far from happy but if it meant that Gwen no longer had a weapon trained directly on Ianto he’d put up with it. The Immortal had also picked up on Ianto’s unspoken concern regarding their captive visitor and, like the Welshman, was wary of the time this was taking. He just hoped that the cell would hold out and that they could get back to the hub as soon as possible, where hopefully they could get the answers needed to convince Gwen that Ianto wasn’t working with their alien 'guest'.
