We had problems with this when I was in youth group and the leaders tried to get us to do Scripture memory. Even the smarter kids didn't see the point, as they'd never been taught to memorize anything in school. The leaders made a pitch to the parents which was spectacularly unsuccessful.

Interestingly, however, us homeschooled kids did fine with it.
