A ficlet from long ago

I have this plan to one day post all of my fiction here, so it is in one place. So this one was originally posted only in
lovebashed's journal in response to a song playlist thingy. Thus, it was originally posted here: http://lovebashed.livejournal.com/81990.html

Daphne’s phone rings just after midnight. “Daph, I have just made the biggest fucking mistake of my entire fucked up life!”

“Another one?” Daphne lays her textbook down and gets more comfortable.

Justin is silent for a moment. “No, actually, it’s the same mistake. I just keep making it over and over.”

“You shouldn’t have left Brian.” It’s not a question.

“Jesus, what was I thinking? WHY do I do this?”

Daphne sighs with the weight of years of friendship. “Well, in your defense, you do seem to make this mistake after major, life-changing events. Um, where are you?”

“In a cab, on the way to your friend’s place.” Justin can hear Daphne’s eyes roll.

“You didn’t even make it to your new place before you have this brilliant insight? At least you’re learning faster. And without a violin soundtrack this time. ”

Justin lets the Ethan reference slide. “Actually, Daph, I had this insight before I even left the Pitts.”

“Huh?”

“He kept the rings, Daph! You should have seen his face when I was packing! He really wanted to marry me, or at least settle down with me! How did I not see that?”

Daphne has been pretty sure since about the age of thirteen that men are the stupidest creatures on earth and it shows in her voice: “I don’t know, you freak, maybe you missed the part where he told you repeatedly that he loved you, and um, repeatedly asked you to marry him, oh yeah, and bought you a mansion when you refused to. It’s understandable that you overlooked all that.”

“Hey, it was NEVER wanted he wanted--all that hetero, lesbianic bullshit.”

Daphne summoned all her patience: “He changed Justin, he had cancer, you almost died--twice. He became a father, he lost his father, his friends settled down, he started his own business, you left him, you came back, he risked everything for you--is ANY of this sounding familiar? That kind of shit changes a person, even Brian Kinney. He grew up--with you!”

“God, Daphne, what am I going to do?” Justin’s voice is sad and desperate. Daphne loves him.

“Stalk him.”

“What??”

“Stalk him. It’s always worked really well in the past. Why mess with a tried and true method? Call me tomorrow and we’ll work out the details.”

For the first time since leaving the loft, Justin smiles.
