Why I hate IJ and LJ

Mar 14, 2008 12:20

For those who haven't already heard this rant, I hate IJ because I don't like the whole "insane" journal, "patients" , "asylums", etc. concept. I know it's supposed to be funny, but to me it isn't. And it probably won't ever be funny to me. It's disrespectful to the mentally ill, in my opinion.
I also hate IJ for the ads, because you can't seem to ( Read more... )

I don't care for insane journal. It takes forever to get into it and what not. I don't care for the name either. I don't find the term insane journal funny or amusing.

I don't care for LJ's practices...but then again I am lazy, I can actually get into LJ, post entries and read my flist, so you know, moral complications here.

I don't shop at Wal-Mart, I refuse to eat fast food (meat packing industry) etc and I try to shop locally...but you know, sometimes I am about ready to simply give up having a journal or buying in general. I am tired of everything having to be a politcal battle or statement.

Catch me tomorrow, perhaps I will be better able to take on China with my Hummer then.

I know what you mean about being tired. And my feet get very cold. All socks are Chinese. I am wearing evil Chinese socks at this very moment.

But I do continue to talk about naked men and graphic sexual acts in my LJ. *kicks the LJ morality police with Chinese-sock covered foot*

On IJ if you go here:
www.insanejournal.com/manage/siteopts.bml
and select "lynx, text only" it gets rid of all the ads! And Tweak (which irritated me even more than the ads).

Give it a shot. I couldn't have been more thrilled when I figured that out. I ended up getting a permanent account later, but almost didn't because this was such a great solution.

I have no idea if there's any similar work-around on LJ, sorry.

Hope this helps.

By the way, I hate the whole "insane" thing too.
But I do have a lot of friends and favorite fandom things that only exist there, so I deal with it, and lodge an opinion on the subject to their powers that be on occasion.

I'll definitely try that on IJ. Thanks. LJ has never needed a work around because you have always had the option of a free account with no ads, which is what I had until last spring. Now that option is being taken away.
I don't like Tweak either!

No problem. It should do the trick. It sounds like an option that would give you a totally formatless true text only interface, but it's not. It does, however, eliminate the ads and Tweak!

True about LJ.

To clarify, I don't mind that Tweak exists as long as I don't have to look at him. I mean, apparently reading and contributing to his little quotes makes some people very happy (though that seems like even more of a useless timesuck than LJ/IJ itself!) and that's fine. It's just his looks. I find his looks totally annoying and creepy, so I was glad I was able to get rid of him. I wouldn't have minded him at all if he was cute or neutral rather than creepy and annoying, and only appeared very small at the top of my f-list, rather than huge and at the top of every damned page. Frank the goat is dumb, but at least he isn't creepy looking and doesn't show up on every page.

You should definitely see if you can find some way to remove the LJ ads. I keep a permanent account because I do like some of the additions it offers so I don't deal with ads.

While I have friends on IJ and will comment from time to time, for personal reasons I find the terms offensive and thoughtless. For the same reason when my daughter hears people banter about with the term "retard" she gets quite irritated. She's actually educated quite a few people over the years.

I hope you can find a happy medium online. Some of the business of these journals can get to a person.

I have a paid journal, so I think I'm okay with not getting the ads. It's just that the new people won't have the option, as I did, of having a free, commercial-free LJ anymore. It's not a happy, positive change!

Your daughter is great! *Aragorn raises his sword in salute*

I really wish I could draw!

This post is old now, but I agree with you completely. From what I read in other journals, it seems that LJ asks for comments and then totally ignores them. Every time I log in now, I expect to find that my account has been "upgraded" but so far it hasn't happened. Hopefully I'll never feel a need to move to IJ.

Your sister's birthday wish is what brought me over here this time. I friended you, and have no idea why I waited so long. Happy Birthday! :)
