Chapter 5

Time passed slowly for the next few weeks. Fun Ghoul's only progress seemed to be physical. He learned quickly how to fight and fire a gun. I suppose it's like riding a bike: you never forget but you are pretty clumsy. His style and grace seemed to come back to him quickly. But what bothered me was his surprise at being able to do these things. He was so much like a child, unbothered and innocent. This world did not exist to him. More improtantly, I didn't seem to exist.

I placed my pencil beside my book, rubbing the sleep from my eyes. I’d thought in maybe if I wrote specifics about Frank in here, I would be able to see something that showed his memory coming back, but I hadn't. I stood up slowly, stretching my back, legs and arms, the popping reminding me I was getting too old for this. I chuckled softly to myself at this revelation.

Sighing softly, I exited my room, my foot falls silent down the hallway as I stopped outside of Ghoul's door. The door was cracked enough to let me peer inside and see that the bed was empty. Fear for his whereabouts curled around my chest as I raced silently through the diner.

An ember glow from outside brightened for a second, long enough to catch my eye, before it was gone again. I walked towards the door slowly with the butt of the gun pressing into the palm of my hand, my fingertips brushing the handle of the door. Had Korse found us? I wondered. It was too dark to see out of the windows clearly, so I edged stepped outside into the cold desert air, pulling my jacket closely around me as I looked for the source of the light.

"Did I wake you?" Frank's voice whispered like the wind pass my ears.

"No, I don't sleep well," I smiled crookedly at him. "Plus, I can smell a cigarette from miles away." Before I was sitting beside him, he was holding out his pack with his lighter. His laugh sounded forced, causing me to study him in the faint light of our cancer sticks. "Care to tell me what's bothering you?"

Frank's POV

For the past few weeks I had been trying to figure out what had happened that day on my way to the store. I just didn't understand. This world was completely different from my own. I glanced at Party out of the corner of my eye. Maybe he could help me figure out who I really was. Was this all just a nightmare, or did I not remember?

I brought my knees up to rest under my chin as I stared out into the nothingness of the desert. I wasn't even sure where to begin, so I started from the time I woke up that fateful Saturday morning.

"So you see?" I asked, catching my breath, my eyes burning with the need to cry. "I miss my family, I want to see them. I don't think this is real and I wish I would just wake up." I shut my eyes tightly as I dug my fingers into my hair, pulling just enough to cause some form of pain to get me to focus on something else.

When I looked up, Party's nose was inches from my own. "Do you trust me?" He whispered, his fingers tracing my jawline as his thumb curved into my bottom lip. Our eyes locked, paused in a single moment of time. Did I trust him? I didn't have a choice, but it was more than that. I'd felt safe here, and comfortable, almost better than at home. I felt like I was one of them.

Party Poison, leader of the Killjoys, looked at me without dominance and aggression. Instead, I saw raw emotion. His eyes like an open book. I shut mine to them, and then his lips were pressing gently against my own. I kissed back, my arms looping around his neck in an effort rid that space between us.

In this moment, I would be whoever Party Poison wanted me to be.
