My boss said that, ironically, my strengths were also my weaknesses. he said my natural inquisitiveness leads to lack of focus (because i'm always bouncing all over the place) and he said that my staunch determination (hi, T :)) leads to my not knowing when to stop beating my head against the wall and find

Sounds like you didn't learn anything new during your review. And you do LITERALLY bang your head against your wall. Stop that!!!! Just sit back and enjoy the bonus. And I'm sure the senior engineer understands that you did Google for a library but it just took an experienced eye to pick out the right search result. ;->
