Happy New Year everyone! Went to a small get together shindig for NYE. It was good fun. Although I know better, and usually compensate for it somehow, there was no real food at the party, and so the drinks got to me a little bit more than necessary. So sorry if you got a drunken call from me at midnight that didn't make any sense

Your call made perfect sense; Brandon just had trouble hearing you because the room you were in was very loud. Sorry I didn't get a chance to wish you a happy new year, but I was nodding off in the bedroom.

Getting a PhD sucks, and it's pretty damn expensive when you consider the opportunity cost of going to school instead of getting a job.

But don't let the naysayers say nay to you. More than raw brilliance, more than the willingness to work eighty hours a week for little reward, it seems to me that the most important quality is tenacity.

If it's a thing you want, just keep plugging away. You'll get there eventually. It's not a race. Sure, you have to work enough to keep your advisor from getting pissed off at you, but you don't have to kill yourself.

Anyway, that's my philosophy about it all. But I'm pretty lazy, so I might just be making excuses for myself. Best of luck for the new year.

Hey! Didn't know you still read this :) How are you doing? Tenacity is the thing that I'm not sure I have at this point. I'm so exhausted and I don't understand why I'm doing it.

I think you are right to point out that it is not a race, no matter what people say. And I am pretty lazy too. We'll see what happens next.

Are you doing your second exam now?
