Life with eight cats got more {busy, expensive, troublesome} when we discovered that one of them had diabetes early this month. In addition to twice-daily insulin shots (which are surprisingly easy with adult cats), we've decided to put them all on wet food with minimal amounts of carbohydrates, and so the food costs have skyrocketed. (We used to ( Read more... )

Oh man, I hear you on the cost of food! The gang here gets 2 cans in the morning, plus a cup of dry in the morning and again in the evening...and it adds up. The canned is definitely the worst offender in terms of wallet injury!
What brands are you going with these days? We're doing a wide mix of things like Tiki Cat, Weruva, Wellness, Evanger's, etc. Every so often we get a brand or flavor that they suddenly turn their noses up at (Evo was the most recently shunned), but for the most part, every scrap gets cleaned out of the bowls. Go figure!

Robin did pretty much all the work of investigating food contents, and after trying a few with our group, we picked out three general brands that everyone seems to like: Wellness, Fancy Feast (I'm amazed, since it's a Purina brand, but it does meet the criteria, and does disappear the fastest) and Innova Cat & Kitten. The Innova is the one that didn't go over so well; there's something like two cans' worth sitting in the fridge as a result, and I'm contemplating putting it out when our gray stray protege comes wandering by next.

I'm thinking that if we can standardize on FF and Wellness, that's probably enough. Perhaps even just Wellness. FF comes only in 3 oz cans which means we crack open 24 of them a day!

Holy something, 24 cans? Daaaaang!
If you translated it into cans only, that would be what, 24 oz total throughout the day, or 4oz/cat...and Nick, Cal, and Spekkio all manage to be rather pudgy even on that. You must have some fearsome appetites for 9oz/cat!

I was totally surprised when I read the Fancy Feast ingredients, too! We were looking for cheap food to feed while TNR'ing around here, and I figured it'd be total junk like most of the other store brands, but I guess at least most of the flavors are pretty good!
We've had great luck with Wellness in general, too - it seems very digestible, and it was the first food Darcy actually ate with enthusiasm (and it's still one of her faves =)). Good stuff!

So what's the story of the 8th cat? I don't think I've heard about that one! =D
