Hmmm.... One of my ex-bosses used to feed their cats with Real Meat. I mean the stuff you get from the butcher, not necessarily tenderloin but heart and the like. I guess it can get pretty expensive, though..? (I don't eat that much meat nor have I ever had a cat, so I've got no idea what the stuff costs, especially compared to the premium kibbles.) Still it's kind of sad you it's possible for companies to sell stuff that is harmful to animals, be it due to poisonous ingredients or just plain wrong consistency. If it was humans, they were royally screwed, I believe... (Hmm, wait, junk food is still legal even though it makes you fat, diabetic and dead? But at least we can choose...)
Oh, I do that too alot. The prob is, it's apparently not quite nutritionally complete -a cat in nature will also ingest the bones and stomach contents and whatnot. A cat just on meat is liable to develop calcium deficiencies and such shit.(I fed "spare meats", as in, internal organs, skin and whatnot -but my parents who sometimes watch the cat do indeed go the steak route ^^). The cost matters so little, a cat doesnt eat much, and anyway, the most expensive food is a lot cheaper than treating a cat that has developed diabetes or something from shit food
( ... )
Wouldn't a vet sell something you can feed your cat (in addition to real meat or fish)? When I worked at a vet's practice they used to sell some cat- and dogfoods for several (medical) conditions.
Yeah, they do. Prob is, they tend to sell Hills Science Diet, while, while their presciption formulas are apparently okay for sickly cats, their standard foods are pretty crap. Thing is, they were super premium sometime in the eighties, and while I have full trust in my vet -she attends yearly conferences on cat heart conditions -she is their heart specialist -her nutrition knowledge is stuck in the past.
Then you have the newer active vets, who may know better, but who simply do not have the experience to deal with the madcap heart disease my cat is dealing with.
(If you're in the Neths, you could also attend a party in Leiden 24.12, which we are throwing)
Thanks for the invitation. I will be in the Netherlands, but at my parents place, so I won't make it.
Doesn't your vet know someone you can talk to about catnutrition? No need of getting rid of the vet. :) My dad and his colleagues only did the "easy" stuff with/on/for cats and dogs, so no info from them either.
Oh, I have absolutely zero intent of getting rid of the vet. The first one I took Rat to, said, I kid you not, "your kitten is broken, get another one". No news we didnt see that fucker again
( ... )
I overreact about Ratsky a lot, you're right there. Still, I'm kinda justified as he's way delicate. I'll buy him more years any way I can. Yeah, I know my feeding regime is kinda like keeping a human on health food only, and I've been accused of keeping him "in a golden cage" before.
Cats live fine on Whiskas and I know a lot of live smokers too. Doesnt mean it's a good idea for longevity. (Then again I smoke too). I guess I sacrifice some of my sanity and some of Rat's freedom, in order to do what I can for his life span. I understand your cats are the normal sort, liable to live twenty years? The vet says Rat with how his heart is would be lucky to make it to four.
He's two and a half now, so I live in daily terror of kitteny death. Excuse my paranoia =)
Well at least you know it! And I know your cat is quite the fragile one, so I'll excuse your paranoia :) I just don't think that if he dies it'll have too much to do with the feeding... I think it's more comparable to a cancer patient only eating health food to stay alive, sure it'll help a tiny bit, but it won't decide his living or dying too much..
