We're going to Egypt! Luxor! For two weeks! I could not be more excited without blowing up into tiny smithereens on the spot. It seemed until last moment that we could not afford it, but the trip we wanted was not sold when we finally scraped the monies together, and we're going next Wednesday ( Read more... )

Egypt is a country people seem to either love or hate. I've been there twice and definitely count as lover, even though it's horribly touristy. Make a trip to Cairo if you can afford it! Not only for the pyramids and the museum but because it's a real city that, for the most part, minds its own business, not only the tourists...

You'll love the food, I promise. It's awesome. Be prepared for some stomach ailments, though, it seems to be around 50% change to catch something there. Usually it's just something that passes in a day or so, but it's not a bad idea to get some diarrhea medication with you (or buy it in the local pharmacy, they should be trustworthy).

Perhaps I was a little harsh in the dictionary post... but the touristyness can get on one's tits. Actually there is "real"city here too, where people drag around their stuff on donkeys and drink coffee, and couldnt care less about a coupla westerners wandering about. Its just if one goes anywhere near the tourist bus routes, all hell breaks loose...

Well, that's the way it is... ...at its worst. I remember walking down the Nile in Luxor on the day one on my own and it was quite an half an hour...

Somehow I've noticed that these people also have a strange sixth sense for who's the newcomer. I absolutely hated Medan (Indonesia) when I was there for the first time, but on the third time I really started liking it and for some reason the hawkers stopped paying attention, as well. Similarly, when I was in A'Dam as a tourist, people tried to sell me drugs all the time, but the last time must've been like three years ago...
