Should I go Mac?

Oct 29, 2006 20:46

Does anyone out there use Mac?

I've been thinking about getting a notebook/laptop and I'm thinking I might like to try out a Mac. Is it worth it? Where can I go to get reliable information on whether or not it's the right chocie for me?

Thanks!

Mr. Bead recommends www.macintouch.com for detailed info on the products and system.

When our desktop died a few months ago, we made the decision to get an iMac rather than another Windows based PC. And we've never once regretted the decision. Not sure about the laptops - but my brother swears by his.

If you guys do videos of the kids - the Mac is the ONLY way to go if you plan on burning those videos to DVD. Omg. In the space of 2 hours I got DJ's first band concert uploaded, added cuts between songs, and then the Mac automatically put these great graphics on it. It looks professional and took almost NO time to do. In fact, the majority of that 2 hour time-span was the actual burning process.

Thanks. I'd like to get more into video/picture organizing/editing, and am thinking Mac may be the best for my purposes. We don't play games or things like that, but I would like to do something with all these digital pictures I've got and to make things with them. And I just need a word processing thing for me to write. Nothing fancy, but easy to use.

Depends what you want to do with it. As a basic machine, it's beautiful and will do the basics fine. For gaming - hard to find games, but not as hard as it used to be (if your kids wanted to play any games, that might be an issue). For movie-making/music-making, it's stupendous out of the box (iMovie/iDVD/Garage Band). Picture-taking/organizing - comes with iPhoto.

Beyond that, I'd need to know more about what you want to do with it to make a recommendation. Also, not a lot of virus issues to worry about and spyware. Very good. :)

Thanks, Jules :) I mostly want it for putting my pictures of the kids on it and then actually doing something with them, like making videos, slideshows, etc. We're not big into games so that's not really a problem. And then I just need a word processing component to do my writing. I'd like the portability of a laptop so that I can write anywhere. I find that sitting at a desk has never been good for in terms of creative juices so I actually end up doing most of my writing by hand and then typing it up later and I'd like to streamline that process a bit :)

I admit, the lack of virus and spyware stuff is a big bonus.

The smaller Mac laptops are good, if a bit pricey. If price isn't that much of a concern, I'd recommend the 15" MacBookPro. They just got an upgrade, so you can probably find the previous versions a bit cheaper if you want to save a little bit (Intel was the previous version, the new ones are Intel Core Duo ( ... )

BTW, if you want to spend $10 to know more about buying a Mac, I'd suggest this.

For what it's worth, I used a Mac when housesitting and found it really, really hard to use. It frustrated me enough that I stayed offline as much as I could.

This is just my opinion, but it seems like the more familiar you are with Windows, the harder it is to use to a Mac. I did a couple of classes with them in university, and a project at work last year. I found it really unintuitive and I had trouble doing anything. It was incredibly frustrating.

YMMV - you might love them!

Hmmm ... thanks for replying. I am very familiar with Windows so now I'm thinking maybe I should head to the library and try theirs out first before I go any further.
