Pride and Yukiness

Nov 27, 2005 10:14

I TRIED. I tried to be open-minded. After all, Jane Austen is Jane Austen, right? I tried not to compare the most recent film version of Pride and Prejudice with the 1995 BBC version. But after 24-hours of reflection, I have decided that even if this one had come first, I still wouldn't have liked it.

Why I Think it Suxed, or, What Was with the Statues? )

Dude, I loved it. And I found the costuming REALLY jarring. They didn't move the time period back - only for the boys and Mrs Bennet (and where the F were the hip bumpers they wore with that sort of dress? conveniently missing...) The rest of them where wearing psuedo-empire. It was FUCKED UP.

But honestly I loved it. I love the Darcy. I LOVE him. I am not a huge fan of colin firth (tho he does a great darcy), and I wasn't really bothered.

I understood Donald, I didn't notice the tree, the statues didn't really bother me, and I really loved the whole movie.

In fact, I might go watch it right now.

Well, you are not alone. Every reviewer in the world seemed to love it. I think I must be one of the snooty "Austenites" who the reviewers keep snarking at in their reviews about hating it...

You are totally entitled not to like it. And I am not an Austinite, but I do have P & P, I've read it about a half dozen times. So I knew the story and some of the lines, but not well enough for dialogue that's been moved around to bother me at all. Not like I know HP. I wasn't really that impressed by GOF, to tell you the truth, although Mellie says it's better on the second watching. I mean I liked it, but not enough to buy the bootleg, if you know what I mean.

You totally wrote this like a million years ago, and er, things. But something in me needs the world to know that Emma Thompson actually rewrote the script. (She gets a Thank You in the credits, which I suppose makes up for being paid and actually credited.)
