The Best Scrooge...

Dec 24, 2005 07:31

...in my opinion is Albert Finney in Scrooge (1970). If you haven't seen this and if you like musicals - I say - watch it! It also has the most adorable Tiny Tim and the most fun Cratchit family. Alec Guiness plays Jacob Marley.

Bill Murray is my second favorite. Who's yours?

I'm one of those bizarre people who prefer the original 1951 B&W version. It's not a musical (for me this is good) and it's just a wonderful production.

I'm with you on the 1951 version. I think one of the things that makes it so good is that Alastair Sim makes such a thoroughly unlikeable Scrooge prior to his visit from the ghosts...it makes his transformation even more remarkable and inspiring. When he's running around his room like a little boy on Christmas morning, he really seems like a totally different person. It stays very close to the book, too, if I am remembering correctly.

But zsenya, I love the Albert Finney version, too. (I'm such a sucker for a good musical.) It always leaves me singing 'Thank You Very Much!' for the next week.

I like the old old version in B/W and I love the Muppet Christmas Carol. "Albus Dumbledore" plays Scrooge and he's perfect.

*puzzles* I thought Michael Caine played Scrooge in the Muppets version :? (checks IMDB)... yes, it was. Either way, a fun film :)

I'm partial to Patrick Stewart's version of the story, in which he plays every character. If you can get your hands on a copy of the audio discs, it's well worth a listen!

You're quite right, it's Michael Caine - for some reason I've got him confused with Richard Harris. My brain is weird. :D

That's so funny, because I love Mr. Magoo's Scrooge too and so few people have actually seen it. I was just watching it tonight actually. My family is now convinced that Judy Garland was singing Belle's song, "Winter Was Warm".

You know, someone at church just gave me a DVD of the 1970 movie. Haven't watched it yet. But I'm encouraged that so many folks here like it so much! My personal holiday faves are Bill Murray's "Scrooged" and the old classic, "White Christmas". Danny Kaye is just one of my favorites ever.

For the Quillers reading this, this is Felina Black, BTW. Don't want you thinking I'm some totally random person.... :)

I just stumbled upon your journal suddenly, and read this post and had to comment - there will never be a better Scrooge than Albert Finney. Simply perfection. Such a delightful movie.

Just had to add my two cents :)
