so i've been at school for four days now, classes have started [although i've had schedule trouble and haven't been able to get to a number of them], everything is unpacked, everything is in order. the Bulgarian roommate didn't show up, she has her own room in another building, so i'm alone. i've pushed the two double beds together. i also put a ( Read more... )

Wow, despite the Bourek situation, you still seem to have so many nice things to say about the Czechs. By the way, am I correct in thinking you live in the US now (Chicago, was it?)? How did a girl from Tabor get there? And did you shoot him? :-)

I can relate to your book fetish too. Though irrational, I have a strong feeling the books I read become part of who I am. It's like I absorb them. I have to have them - the book pack-rat I am! A good excuse for collecting books I invested my time in reading is, that I am stupid and can't retain any knowledge unless I relearn it regularly. :-) The sad truth. :-(

no, i met her in Tabor. but she wondered the same thing that i was there. and no, i didn't shoot him, although i did act pissy and female at him; and his flaws are his own responsibility, i don't at all consider his being a shit emblematic of some sort of national Czech flaw, although it may be somehow related to the universal Slavic male stereotype of drinking a lot and being irresponsible and making women take care of you ( ... )

Yes, the Slavic men... All I know about Czech men is that they are very "macho" (is that how you spell it?), many times even aggressive. I may have a little skewed idea, because I come from the industrial Northeast Moravia/Silesia, where men are either coal miners, unemployed or gangsters. :-) Certain values and social behaviors are typical for such depressed regions ( ... )

i talked with this Englishman in Prague about Czech women and American women. he was a complete idiot. [ok, here's the link to what i wrote about him when i was there.] he said that American men liked Czech women because they were tired of American women being neurotic and hard to satisfy, but he personally thought Czech women were boring and only thought about money and never about Important World Issues [in his words]. i thought his description of American girls was actually pretty accurate, if sort of annoying, but his description of Czech girls was completely unfair, he was just falling back on the old Slavic stereotype of the practical, earthy woman who takes care of the loutish man who is irresponsible and drunkenly talks about Important World Issues in the pub. and anyway, Czechs in general are thriftier [cheaper] than Americans and probably English people, that is one generalization that i feel completely comfortable applying across the board ( ... )
