you don't spread dirt around the house. particularly not on carpets which accumulate bacteria and dust and later give asthma to your children, or at least make everyone in the house wake up in the morning with their noses clogged.

also means you can walk barefoot, sit anywhere on the floor, and eat pieces of food that fall on the floor. floor becomes friend, not enemy :p

well, duh, i understand the point. but then here (Far Eastern Germany - Poland) there are tons of communal shoes (I can make an argument for that possibly being unsanitary, too, despite my feeble American mind). but then there are plenty of shoes which look just like the Communal Shoes, but aren't, and understandably, this annoys people. if I forget my keys, run back into my room, and leave my shoes on, people look at me funny. there are shoes which you ONLY wear inside the apartment. there are shoes which you wear ONLY inside the vestibule or while taking out the trash. the special shoes for wearing ONLY inside the apt. have a special place on the shoe rack, and a special sack on the rack that they go into, and if you disrupt the order, there are other shoes which little old ladies hit you with (especially if you inadvertently try to wear them) in an ancient cultural ceremony.

you may think i am exaggerating. only slightly. :P

buddhism in the developed countries is just another type of self-help literature, i think, with the same elements of loving oneself, living in the present moment, harmony with the world, as any guide for a good relationship. considering that self-help literature is the only thriving religion in developing countries.

ah you know, all those people that will reach spiritual balance only after they get a cute yoga mat and other whatever-is-sold-in-yoga-equipment-shops.

...a freshman in college who received an absentee ballot a day after the election ended.

hey, all this talk about buddhism gives me an idea. why don't you dress up like a buddhist monk for one of the calendar photos... and we will smear ice cream all over you. it'll be hot.
