for the past two weeks, the weather has been strange. i walked home late one day from the library and it was misty and really just creepy in a lurid, Gothic sense; it was the kind of night that makes you think of headless horsemen and Dracula turning English maidens into bloody nymphomaniacs. i walked past all the dorms, these very mundane ( Read more... )

I watched Jires' adaptation of The Joke last month, and was sadly disappointed (as I love some of his other work). I actually fast forwarded through a majority of it. I don't know why anyone would try to adapt a Kundera novel in the first place. On the other hand, Pearls of the Deep has got some extremely beautiful pieces (all based on Hrabal shorts). You've probably already seen that though!

i agree with you about adapting his novels. have you seen Unbearable Lightness of Being? it's really not good, and Kundera was very grouchy about it. on the other hand, he was involved with writing this screenplay and seems to approve of the movie; also, The Joke is the most linear of his novels, i think, so i was a little more optimistic. eh. we'll see, i guess.

I haven't worked up the nerve to watch Unberable Lightness, and probably never will. Unless it's generally lauded as something goddamn special, I tend to avoid movie adaptations of my favorite novels, because they generally tarnish (imho) the impression (and seldom live up to the quality) of the book. There are exceptions of course. Is there an article or other source where he talks about making the movie or working on the screenplay? I'd be curious to read it.
