What fandom has taught me ...

Before I start, if I piss anyone off, well, too bad. This is my opinion only, and its something I've been thinking about for a while, and recent events have sort of forced it to the front. I don't mind an intelligent discussion, but I do mind assholes. Don't be one here, thank you ( Read more... )

You're welcome, sweets. <3 And I know I tend to go off because I participate in heavily teen-based fandoms, but I am honestly appalled at what fandom considers appropriate behavior.

I agree with you completely, and you put into words very eloquently what I've been thinking a lot about lately. I think part of it is younger people not realizing that their words and actions on the Internet have consequences just the same as "real life" and it emboldens them to be stupid and speak without thinking. At least, I find myself fervently hoping that they aren't like that offline, because that scares me more.

Call me an old fuddy-duddy, but I kind of miss those days of being a fan without knowing every little thing about my celebrity crushes and the other fans. Sometimes ignorance is bliss.

(Also, I never knew you could reverse cowgirl with banana pudding. Would you be able to describe that in detail? or pics? ;D)

Absolutely your first paragraph. I know I'm into teen-based fandoms and that tends to send me into a tizzy, as they say, but honestly. Really?

You're not a fuddy, nor a duddy. Sometimes just imagining and knowing nothing is a far better thing. And God, now I have to draw that scenario? It will be stick figures, just warnin' ya.

You certainly didn't piss me off--I agree with every point. Previously, i thought that kind of behavior was confined to the TH fandom, but turns out it's just because that was the only fandom I was in. 1D is even worse. I don't understand it. You say look at those who are raising them, I think a lot of it has to do with parents who aren't so much "raising them" but pay no attention to their kids or what their kids do, but throw money and permissiveness at them to get them to be quiet.

You know, so did I, TH being my first 'banddom' but while TH fans can be special, I find the 1D and even some of the BTR fans to be just batshit and RUDE. If Brynn said crap like that anywhere, I would hang his butt up to dry.

And you're right about the $$ and permissiveness. People are scared of their kids, they don't want to deal, and they don't want to know, either. You're in the minority to keep an eye on your kids, and so am I.

You are, of course right. But I think these are actually two separate problems (although their effects are synergic ( ... )

We do live in an age where social media never sleeps, and there is always the fear of 'missing something." It's bizarre and people don't understand the human component. No one's personal time should be compromised by demands for information that can clearly wait. And I know, God forbid it be accurate. Non-accurate makes for a better sound byte.

I think a contributing reason to the sociopathic appearance or actions of kids today is that on the internet, you can be anything, anyone. You can say anything, no matter how terrible and wrong it is, and you don't have to see who you're attacking. You don't have to account for your actions. Kids with their developing minds with this kind of power? Disaster. I totally agree with you.
