So I had a glass of soda before bed and then picked up my book. Never a good combination if one wants sleep. Anyway, I finished Stardust tonight. I had only gotten 2 chapters into it over the past week what with school and work. As usual I am pleased with Gaimans writing. I'm amazed by the gentle yet wide emotional swings the book makes in ( Read more... )

I read Stardust a few weeks ago. Nice story but I'm always left wanting after his books. (Good Omens was the best, and that was a collaboration - but it's a lot of fun, specially for anyone with any Catholic upbringing. A cheerful tale about the Antichrist and the apocolypse - 3 stars ( ... )

I like bittersweet in moderation. And yes, I find Gaiman's writing easy to read (I read 90% of the book last night), but I do respect the smoothness of the emotional shifts. In comparison to Stevenson's 135 degree turns on a dime.

I guess sometimes I just like simple and sweet. You could say it's my version of TV :)

I'll look up some of Ellison's work as I've never read anything by him, and I'm probably going to pick Quicksilver back up soon. Then again, I start my 6 week english course on Wednesday so I don't know how much time I'll have much in the way of choice about what I'm reading :)

the good thing about Ellison is that the majority of his work (at least 90%) is are short stories - so it's a quick yet intense read.

I do like Gaimans stuff - American Gods is a lot of fun and, like I said before, I think GOod Omens is just excellent. BUt on bits like Stardust and others they seem more like fairy tales - and maybe they are meant to be - and i just want them to have a little more to them.

I got a shelf of Ellison that I covet and will let you borrow one next time I see you.

I haven't read any of Stephenson's (whatever) writing - the sheer weight of the books scared me away.

Well, maybe one of us should have another not-a-party some time soon, or maybe a bit of a book swap.

Stephenson can be a bit overwhelming with the heft of his novels. He's not the most concise writer you'll ever find. But he does a good job of taking you on a journey. I think he's a good cross between Gibson and Jordan, though unlike Jordan he can finish a damn story. (I think I've given up on reading Jordan, atleast until he dies) But I tend to enjoy long reads. One of the many nice things about being with Steph is she likes shorter faster reads, and so I get to read a few of those in between tackling my 800+ page dense novels. I also keep cheese like Stackpole around for turning my brain off.

I know this has come up before, but we really should do a book thing. I think there are enough diverse tastes and open minds to really make it a fun thing.

That being said, when do we have the time? *sigh*
