Times haven't changed much at all; I've known people who've travelled across Canada by sneaking on trains and up and down Alberta, and yet others who travelled all the way to El Salvador more or less by sneaking onto trains (I've only gone a few blocks). The Alberta guys were none-too-bright about it and did it in a just-barely-death-defying manner, the other guys and girl travelled in posh comfort, comparatively.
