Do you know how to knit? Basically you will need: yarn. 4-5 double sided knitting needles (I'd recommend wood or bamboo over metal, though a not too smooth aluminium would be okay). Some kind of pattern.

Honestly, I'd stop by weaving works in the U-dist - they can set you up.

(I've tended to make up my sock patterns. There are advantages and disadvantages to this method.)
