Misguided Generations

If any of you know me, you know I've had an extremely rocky relationship with my father, especially in the past 5 years. We've begun talking again, tentatively here and there, sometimes even civilly. We've even gotten to the point were he's started trying to do nice things for me ( Read more... )

Unfortunately, I recognize it for what it is - a bizaare gesture of caring, of concern for my future and well-being.

Its just kinda messed, considering, GEE, ITS NOW 2005, NOT 1936.

Eh. You know, though, as a trying-to-be single mom struggling to keep my head above water, I do appreciate the value of that sort of thing.

The giving the number randomly, not. But if my father happened to coincidentally invite to dinner some sexy funny lawyers who happened to make lots of money and thought moms were the hottest thing around...I wouldn't be complaining.

To put it in more complicated terms, things haven't fundamentally altered /that/ much since 1936. It's still tough to make it in the world, even if you're a woman with a good job, with a partner that's a bum. Trust me, I've done it. It holds you back.

Now I'm not saying I'll never date a poor man again, I'm just saying that realistically, I recognize that it tends to stop you from being screwed when you date up rather than down on the financial scale.

Though if /anyone/ gave my phone number to someone I didn't know, there'd be a lot of Kill Now coming from my mouth. I'm rabid about my privacy.

Well. Introducing me to someone, or inviting them out to a dinner party, all of us together is one thing. I'd feel silly, but know its a caring gesture.

But he just gave my number to some random guy he works with. Which is the messed up part.
