Because the Negative Sex was Born into a Bloodline mresundance March 3 2009, 16:14:45 UTC
HOLY COW.

As rhoboat said: great editing, but requires multiple viewings to really pick out all the various depths of meaning.

I was just blown away by this. I can't quiet put into words how stunning and reveling portions of this were. As others have said, raw and honest and intense. I loved the chorus and I loved the implications not just in fandom, but on a wider scale.

Yaaay! *fist pumps* Thinking caps! Though to be honest, this is primarily directed towards fandom. Our way of looking at things can get kind of skewed by the fact that it's comprised almost entirely of girls, with similar political leanings.

Hm, I think that's why I like fandom. It is almost a complete reversal of the world outside of fandom in some ways. Women are the movers, the thinkers, the leaders, the be-ers, the doers, the great creatrixes, motivators, and deliverers of smackdown, amongst many other things. The rest of us just to come along for the ride. :D I think it just about levels out some of the inbalances in parts of my non-fandom life.

....true. Really, that's why I do honestly love some of those *cough*other*cough* 'putting the smackdown on anyone who tries to keep us from being awesome' vids that have been circulating lately. Being able to claim that agency is just so. WONDERFUL.

Though to be fair, I don't know the exact numbers, but a hell of a lot of the fic out there is slash, which sort of by nature tends to marginalise the women for fear of their threatening OTPs. : / Not always, but.. a whole lot of the time. Whenever this fact is brought up, I've seen people quick to point out, 'but there's femmeslash too!', but honestly, it's still a fairly minor specialised interest.

It still totally beats RL overall though, easily, where we wouldn't really be in a position to have this kind of conversation at all. Or even worse, venturing into the sort of sites where all the fanboys congregate. *shudders*

And yes, I'll reply to your long rambly thing later, I just get overwhelmed by... lots of paragraphs. *facepalms*

I love this vid so much. I've felt lately like fandom's been inundated with pro-women vids that are anything but, because to me acts of violence shouldn't qualify as any person's, male or female, "strength." I went over and read your notes after watching the vid and just don't have enough YES for this sentiment - Why is strength considered such an important attribute? Why not skill, compassion, empathy, knowledge, wisdom, kindness?

I know that visually a lot of vidders/vid watchers are drawn to big explosions and snazzy fight sequences, but personally I prefer more contemplative types of vids where the character's *character* is explored - their thoughts, their emotions, their motivations, their knowledge. I'd rather see a close-up of a revelatory expression than a punch any day of the week.

As for this - Also, I hadn't even noticed this before starting to make the vid, but when men sexually take advantage of women, it is generally portrayed as the horribly disturbing act that it is. Rightly so. When women sexually take advantage ( ... )

Yay! : D *happy dance* I was starting to feel like I was the only one to feel this way, what with the general direction fandom's been heading down more than usual lately.

To be fair, sometimes violence is inherent to who a character is, and a part of that overall exploration. Where this can go squicky, though, is when it's glorified as a positive trait. This vid is quite violent, but you're supposed to be unsettled by it and hopefully re-evaluate your priorities.

And I'd completely forgotten about Buffy until you pointed that out too. Season six in general is just not something I've wanted to think about too much since it's aired, but, YES. Buffy comes onto Spike when he's not in the mood, she aggressively persists until they have sex, and it's supposed to be cute. And then when Spike tries to have sex with her when she's not in the mood, suddenly ( ... )

it goes as follows: she tries to kiss Sam, he says no and pulls away, she refuses to take no as an answer and sets up camp between his legs, grabs his hand, and places it on her body. WTF, double standards much?

Oh sweetie. Don't you know "no" is really "yes" at another time? /slightly snarky.

Yes, it was rather creepy!

Oh wow, I loved the editing of the scenes in your vid, it came across as just so powerful. And your perspectives in your notes are very interesting!
when men sexually take advantage of women, it is generally portrayed as the horribly disturbing act that it is. Rightly so. When women sexually take advantage of men, it's framed and blocked as sexy. I hadnt really thought of it this way but that's so true!

Thank you so much for watching (and reading!). : D

Sexiness should not be a weapon.

I can't even begin to flail about this vid because everyone has already flailed and they say my flaily things with much better speaking skillz. But srsly, I thank you for this study and the editing and everything about it. I adored your discussion in a bunch of these comments and the giant meta notes from your other entry. It's not my most verbally pretty comment, but it's real gushing, believe you me. This was AWESOME!

To be honest, having made you flail (and read, and watch) is still quite an honour in itself. \o/ *is delighted*

I have a hard time verbalising a lot of things too, and really, that has got to be one of the greatest appeals of vidding. You can bypass all the wordy stuff and still synthesise information with quite a lot of clarity. And then hopefully people can watch them and just go, 'WORD'. Or possibly argue. But whatever, it makes points. ^_^
